Our house is hooked up to a generac. It’s always more quiet outside when the power goes off in the neighborhood so that seems to make the generator seem even louder. I swear you can hear it two blocks away. It’s also not a rhythmic noise, it sounds like a train is coming. Truth is we rarely ever use it. We evacuate during hurrricanes, and the power doesn’t go out often or for long otherwise.

I have a kholer 30kw standby generator that sounds like a air conditioner compressor when running.
Expensive, but worth it.

It’s ok for HIM to have a generator, just not the rest of us. I like how he’s complaining about the “windy day” policy which sounds eerily similar to gun control.

You want an inverter.
Honda, Yamaha, Wen, even harbor freight has inverters.
Dont buy a honda if you plan to use it after this.

If I was in your situation I would seriously look at whole house generators.
So instead of spending $2500 on expensive portable generators you recommend he spend $5,000-10,000 on a home system?
OP Yamaha and Honda were the leaders for years but now there are 5+ other options out there for similar quiet inverter generators. The smaller and quieter you go the more expensive. Why does it need to be quiet? How long is the power company planning on having the power out? I doubt this actually happens the food waste would be unreal.

The quality 5000-5500w (start) inverter-based generators will run $3500-$4200 and a 10,000w whole house unit with an auto transfer switch will run about $2900 and depending on how much you spend on the electrical and gas hookup will be in about the same neighborhood. Depending on the size of the house and energy efficiency it may not run EVERYTHING but it will run twice as much as the portable and come on automatically. Even if it is 20% more they are great to have especially if you EXPECT power to go off regularly.
If he decides inverter power isn't needed and will live with more noise then he is under $1k and the difference is large enough I wouldn't have mentoned it.
