Jesus was trying to help out the fishermen back in the day

A long time ago some Christians were jealous of all the Jewish traditions and holidays so they came up with some of their own.

Prior to Vatican 2 - there was no meat all 40 days of Lent

Also , pre Vatican 2 no meat on any Friday of the year - post Vatican 2 days a sacrifice can be made on Friday in lieu of abstaining from meat

Yeah man it's just one of those weird things. I'm a man of faith and if you want to withhold meat for a day and you actually use that time to meditate on Christ's sacrifice, that's great. If you wanna eat meat on Fridays during lent, that's cool too. Eating or not eating a certain food isn't what saves you anyway.

Fun Fact: Orthodox Christians also abstain from sex on Fridays during Lent.

I love time with the lord, I love my wife & I love steak. I'll be having all three today.

it’s not but even Jesus fasted and abstained - so there must be some merit to it, and if we are trying to be more like Him, then maybe we could do a little of what He did. It may not be for everyone.

I believe, back in Rome, the fishermen were hurting, and asked the pope for help, thus creating a time period for the fishermen and their catch to be at a huge demand.

It makes a lot more sense than the bs, that preachers or bishops. Come up with

Something about the Pope making a deal with fisherman back in the day. No meat on Fridays during lent means more money in Fishermans pocket means more money in church collection plate.

This is absurd false history.

My Dad's side (stepmom and siblings) are Greek Orthodox and they abstain from meat on Fridays year round.

Thankfully, I can't speak to the no secks thing.

Replacing that luxury item with something equally as luxurious, despite it being kosher, makes the "sacrifice" meaningless IMO.

Right. That's why the "all you can eat seafood buffet" types get mocked every year. If they read the actual guidance on fasting, they'd see that it calls for one normal meal and, if necessary, two smaller meals that don't add together to make a full meal. All meatless of course.

The idea that your "fasting" is eating like normal then going to a fish fry for dinner is silly and misses the point.

In 1563, Queen Elizabeth I, the daughter of King Henry VIII, mandated fasting from meat on Wednesdays specifically to support the fishing industry. Catholics eat fish on Fridays because they cannot eat meat (and, apparently do not want to eat a meal of only grains, fruits, or vegetables).

non-catholic with a lot catholic friends and family but i can appreciate getting together for a fish fry or crawfish boil during lent. It is just using tradition as an excuse for friends and family to get together.

It is the Catholics that have to let you know every friday that they have to eat seafood that bother me. "yeah i can do lunch but there needs to be a seafood option...its lent"

then don’t do that - no one is forcing you to eat fried fish, shrimp or oysters, etc

For sure. It all depends on your heart posture and what you're trying to accomplish with it. Are you fasting and whining the whole time, telling everyone how hard it is or using it the way it should be? Personally I don't fast very often but I haven't disliked it when I have.

Even St. John of the Cross said

quote:

Conquering the tongue is better than fasting on bread and water

So people need go decide which is most important, right? Lent isn’t about giving something up, it’s about getting closer to God. The church just tried to guide people on what to do. Something that may be attainable by everyone. But we won’t know if we did well until the end.
