There is always outliers. But the rule of thumb is most men will cover an unfortunate face with a beard and baldness with a hat.

I only grew my beard out because I got so sick of shaving. 7 years later I still don't have the desire to shave it off and go back to shaving 4-5 times a week. I couldn't care less about the trend or how it looks, though my wife loves it and says she'll leave me if I shave it off.
I do keep it pretty short and clean though.
