I have a five year old son who I would like to take hunting in a few years so I’d like to start teaching the importance of gun safety soon. Problem is a sack of shite listens better than my five year old son.

Obviously he wouldn’t be allowed to just grab it and go out in the yard alone. He would only be allowed to use it with me supervising him. Is five years old appropriate or should I wait another year or two? I had my first BB gun when I was 7.

I’d love it if teaching him about gun safety with a BB gun would in turn help him become more aware of his surroundings and teach him more discipline overall.

Any thoughts?

Absolutely 5 is perfect age!

my dad let my aunt Helen give me one for my 5th birthday and he supervised me until he knew I was safe with it

I'm sure he benefits from such a patient, understanding father

Only you know your son. So age isn’t the qualifier as much as the level of interest and how he listens to you.
I started my son around 5 w a daisy red rider. He’s now 15 and we have been on some amazing hunts together and he’s quite good with firearms.
Good luck.

at 5, still a bit young, but you can set him up on a shooting bench. By 7 he should be able to load and cock it. So, start now, cause you have to be there with him. Just make it fun and have a close target, big at that.

I think whenever you feel he can handle it.

My 5 year old has shot my 22 and AR, with me pretty much holding the rifle.

A 7 yo could proba ly handle a bb gun by himself, i would think

I would say 4 or 5... Of course, as long as he is supervised.

My nephew got one of these the Christmas before he turned 7.

Good thinking. I'd say a weak BB gun at 7. Back in the day I ran all over our neighborhood street shooting birds (yes, I feel bad about it now). I learned a lot, especially not to drop a gun down on its butt climbing over a fence. Right in the chest. Became an excellent shot. Of course, if you don't have a place for him to shoot, its gonna be tough on him if he enjoys it, unless you are willing to take him out in the woods often.

I got my 7 yr old daughter and five yr old son one this spring. Just a couple of cheap Daisy and the small red ryder for my some. I wanted something cheap in case they decided it wasn't for them after trying it out. I wanted to start out with just basic gun safety and once they had that down move on to teaching them how to use their sights, how to get a sight picture, things like that.

One thing I will say is even the regular sized Daisy was a bit too big for my son to be able to handle so I went and got him the smaller red ryder from Walmart. We've had a lot of fun and they've learned a lot this summer. They both call me out sometimes because I'm not as vigilant (for myself) about safety as I am with my real firearms. My daughter is really a decent shot for a seven yr old girl using standard iron sights on a bb gun. I think they're gonna be ready to step up to a .22 soon so I'm looking at getting a couple of Crickets or maybe some sort of 10/22 takedown I can customize and get lightweight enough for them to practice with. And I would just like a badass 10/22 because the only one I have is my old Ruger from when I was a kid.

Sorry for rambling, but go for it man. I've had a ton of fun out in the backyard reliving my childhood with a Daisy bb gun.

Was hunting tree rats with a 410 by myself at 8. Sucked cause I had to go pick pecans to sell to buy my own shotgun shells.

If you are teaching them gun safety and how to shoot and not allowing them to play with it like a toy, then I would think its as long as they are able to understand, its never too early to teach them gun safety and how to use it.
