The only viable reason to fake a moon-landing would be to create cover to dump a tremendous amount of money into the advancement of rocket motors and telemetry computing systems to advance our ICBM capacity without freaking out the Russians and our own citizens.

For awhile the government had no idea who the DC sniper was so they said it was someone in a white van with ladders just so they’d have a reason to pull over undocumented workers and deport them.

Billions and Billions of dollars sent the James Webb telescope out into space. Billions of dollars sent Hubble into space.
Has there been one fricking picture of the Apollo 11 moon landing site? Or Apollo 12, 14, 15, 16 or 17? All that money spent and we can't get something as simple as a good photo of a 200 yard square area on the moon, but by God, check out this image of a flea on this planet just 10 billion light years from Earth!!

The memo most used to support that theory is cherry picked and must be isolated from all other evidence and circumstances of the time. Acknowledging more difficulty than expected in a military op does not equate to pulling out.
This all comes from the Kennedy myth surrounding his assassination, ie "martyrdom" per the JFK cultists. I personally like JFK, but when you research his administration and career, alot of the luster he's gained in pop culture disappears. Other than the Cuban Missile Crisis (in which he essentially saved human civilization itself), Kennedy was a so so president domestically and in foreign affairs. His vaunted "Camelot" was a facade shielding personal scandal and his "best and brightest" were a collection of Ivy League dilettantes and eggheads that were in way over their heads and usually did a poor job.

True, he had some beef with former CIA leadership and perhaps that is a factor in the assassination. Its not as if the CIA wasnt well practiced in assassinations at the time. It is only one of many possibilities, though. There were many with motive and means, foreign and domestic.

Pretty sure they found that the earth and the moon have the same base compositions in their soil and the moon came out of the earth when it was formed as a counterbalance to the EArth, but don't want to rain on your parade.
But that hexagon at the north pole of Saturn is definitely sus.

That's interesting and good for him. Sounds like quite the accomplished person. I suppose there are a lot of things that are classified which some might not have been at or felt at liberty to share based off the nature of the knowledge. Also, I am sure the government at the top levels has the means to keep certain things hush hush should national security hinge on the information never seeing the light of day. My point is, who knows for sure, save a few select folks, where the truth lies. That isn't meant as a swipe at your grandfather nor anyone else who might have a relative in a similar position.
I say that because two radio personalities having almost no resources, were in a position to fool half the country that we were being invaded by aliens during a radio broadcast in the 1930's. It doesn't take many to pull off a big caper(History Channel link below)

Well there are a host of things...had you been goaded by the government properly, you would be hesitant to speak out against something of this magnitude, not to mention I am sure they had their futures set to the hilt by going along with the story in many realms. Not saying they DID lie but there were plenty of plausible reasons to do just that. Again, I am not saying the Moon missions were faked, but some things do seem a bit off circa 2022 looking back.
