That variation of the simulation hypothesis, the one with God included as an architect, essentially makes your current existence the equivalent of purgatory. And that is a possibility that Christian thinkers have explored extensively. But most think it seems unlikely.
In non-Christian philosophy, you’re basically describing a variant of solipsism. Which, while being unable to be disproven, is pretty universally agreed to not be a good way to organize your world view. When you go around the world thinking that everyone else is just an NPC, it opens up a very wide door to thinking that you are the only person that matters… and when societies start to see more of that mindset is usually when those societies start to break down. Meaning even if this is in fact a game, that mindset would make you more likely to lose it.
The safest bet for the sustainability of whatever existence you currently reside in is to treat every person around you as if they possess a soul equal in value to your own (which is very difficult to do if you entertain the prospect that everyone else is just a bunch of NPCs). That has consistently been society’s best tool for maintaining stable social systems.

Everyone else: our parents, friends, random strangers are NPC's we interact with. Maybe we're to learn a lesson for the next level of play or maybe for the amusement of God or whatever AI wrote the code.
Better question: If true, what difference would it make? What would ‘real’ even mean? Would you love your family less? With the death of a loved one still not make you sad?Would ice cream still not taste good? Would a day off work hanging out with your friends drinking a beer still not bring you happiness?
(Really think about that)

Even better is to treat every person not just as an equal, but the same, as in you and I are part of the same larger soul, just at different parts on the journey towards enlightenment/salvation/consciousness/whatever. It is easy to say, but very hard to practice. That's how I try and operate. Some days it's easy. Some days it's impossible.
Some days I wish the doors of perception had not been opened to me, but most days I am thankful.

Frequent posters in the Politard forum are exactly that.

Perhaps it's actually a test in order to level up

In a way we are.
You can pick your path in life. You have to align your mindset, energy, and actions with the version of you that you want. So why pick what you don't want?
So in my simulation let's say I want friends. Ok, well I'm going to wake up every day and say I have lots of friends and go about my day as such. Say hi to everyone. Reach out to people I know, be a friend to others, and so on.
And in that simulation, I want to be a successful salesman. I'm going to put on my best outfit and go into the world saying I make $10K sales (or whatever), not make one and go oh wow that was cool I'll never do that again and go back to doing $2K.
Act as if you already have what you want and it will come.
To level up you need to be able to look at your past self and do a mental inventory. What kept you from being this person before? Start to close the gaps on your personality flaws that were stopping you. You'll start to see past versions of yourself and realize you can in fact control everything in your life*; that's when you've made it to the next level.
*you cannot control what others do to you, only your reaction

Instead of a simulation, what if your life is simply a dream and in the morning you wake up in prison?
What if the ocean is just another dimension where we can fly but cannot breathe?

The Matrix created the movie to frick with us by telling us we’re in it.

I heard something on that show Midnight Gospel that day to day life has become like grinding in world of warcraft for exp and weve been doing it so long that we have forgotten that were playing a video game.. weve become our characters playing this in depth and immersive game.

If we are, can somebody please help me switch mine off of hard mode? I've had enough.

You attract and create your own reality based on what you think about most.

It makes my wife irrationally angry when I start down that road. I point out she knows it isn't true because she knows she exists, but I can't ever know that she actually exists. Maybe it doesn't help when I respond to everything she says with "that's what my brain would have you say."
Eeeh…the “irrational” part is debatable.

I tried to create a reality where nobody I love gets sick or dies. It didn't work.
