Nope it was in the gulf. He was huge and when it was in the middle of the gulf everyone was worried about where it would hit. But it ended up hitting a sparsely populated area in Mexico.

Strength isn't considering size as far as I know. Wind speed and pressure, no?

But wasn't Camille same winds of 175 but 900 on the pressure vs Katrina at 902?

Camille had 200 mph winds.

The strongest recorded hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico is Hurricane Katrina

Nah, I don’t think that’s true by either mph or pressure.
But by size and the storm surge she pushed, it was about as bad as it gets.

I had heard that but was that report real? Wiki says 175 recorded. In 1969 a bunch of data was lacking.

Camille was a perfect hurricane. Small and fiercely compact. It’s still the modern standard.

Try being the Mississippi gulf coast and Katrina.

I feel like when you get to these level hurricanes it's the difference between 102 degrees heat index and 108 degrees: it sucks, to say the least.

There isn’t a size designation, no. But Camille was a compact little storm whereas Katrina blotted out half the gulf it seemed like. It makes a difference.

Fun fact:
Hurricane Gilbert was the reason Alabama postponed a football game against Texas A&M..
Turned out to be a nice Saturday afternoon in College Station that originally scheduled date.

I thought it was Gilbert.

It was for a while. It was huge. Peak strength it almost covered the entire Gulf.

Camille was stronger than Katrina at landfall.

Katrina peaked in the middle of the Gulf and weakened some before landfall . Katrina was Much larger. Surge prolly worse.

I looked and it appears Allen hit its peak of 190mph just north of the Yucatan as it left the Yucatan channel into the gulf.

Wasn’t there one in the 1780s that was supposedly massive? Affected the American revolution somehow.

Is that the one that spurred off tornadoes that ripped through the British army and skipped over the Americans? Think I read that in one of O Riellys books.
