Right. So to be a tough guy you have to smell bad? Got it.

The real answer is taxation; smoking has become a fairly expensive habit, and the prevalence of multiple pack a day smokers has dropped precipitously-- meaning the people who did smoke had additional incentive to wean the addiction.
As smoking has become more expensive, the alternatives for treating the addiction have also blossomed; this has expanded the opportunity for an addict to reform and quit, or at least curtail their smoking.
Throw them together, and you get a population where public smoking is a behavior in visible decline, which feeds on itself-- you don't see people smoking socially as much, you don't see it every day necessarily-- and it snowballs as a social phenomenon, becoming a behind closed doors thing.

I don't mind if someone smokes if I can avoid them. I do mind when they do it right by the entrances of buildings, restaurants, or where the general public might roam. If I walked though a designated area and complained, I'd be an a-hole for sure, but not when it's as the only exit available
Sorry you hate the freedom of others.

I don't know what killed smoking, but I know what killed the dinosaur --

You say that, but I didn't see hardly any college kids smoking at the LSU game I went to this year. 10 years ago it was a smoke fest.

I think it was because big tobacco called black people a "market priority".

I have noticed a sharp downturn in smoking
In the US, there has been a consistent anti-smoking campaign for the last 25 years.
In Europe, they're still smoking like the 70s and 80s in the states. Baffles me.

It's way cheaper for trashy people to pop pills than smoke these days. Would be interesting to see West Virginia's stats on this since we know they are hardcore on the pills.

A bunch of campuses banned smoking in that time frame. LSU included.

Smoking is still going strong.

My dad's siblings smoked. Well 5 of the 7 did. Dad died of cancer in 2014. Aunt Betty died at 69 of cancer. Uncle Lloyd died at 67 of lung cancer. No reason to start.
My mom smoked 20 cigs a day and died at 53. My shirts smelled like shite when I went somewhere outside the home. It often took 3 washing a to get the stench out of my clothes.
I think of the money I saved by not smoking. Gross habit

I'm not sure about that. Look at the increase in numbers of all the disgusting fatties out there with their huge bellies, and their flabby arms and saggy pectorals.
Fat shaming had been pretty ineffective, even when the fmr. Governor of California is involved.

The gay arts majors on campus still smoke. You see them outside the library all the time puffing on their cigs like they're penises

We may shame fat people in private, but as long as they get rascals at Disney and Walmart, we won't be shaming them in public effectively. Make those frickers walk and they'll start feeling the heat
