Too bad you baws don't know the glory that is the Industry at the Range Day before SHOT. The 25 shell drum fully auto shotgun was fun as hell to shoot. Watching them break it down for cleaning every half hour or so was interesting...well that and the hill of spent shells laying in a pile. The slo-mo video clip still brings a smile to my face. Same booth...9mm auto with a huge clip was #2. 3rd was the preproduction .50 cal UMAREX air rifle. Believe it or not, that .50 is going to be available at retail since it's an air gun.
After Monday's range day the 4 days of SHOT are fun when you ho back and talk to the guys on the show floor. In the press room we got lucky to end up at the same table as Vince Vaughn's identical twin...the guy had the same cadence and everything. The guy's name even sounds like it's an alternate name Vaughn would use.
Fun times building a media outlet from scratch. Entering year 4 and have finally got traction in two states.
(Gotta plug a site other than ours...gunstreamer.com is great for the video YouTube took down last year.)

An assault rifle is a selective-fire rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine

Wouldn’t it be co considered a battle rifle?

Well a true assault rifle is illegal to own. But I’m sure you know that.

Machine guns are not illegal to own

Well correct and I should clarify as already pointed out, made before 1986 and the usual laundry list of restrictions.
You don’t walk into Cabelas and buy one.
A “prohibit person” is a class of person defined under federal law who is not allowed to posses firearms nor ammunition (not just full-autop machine guns).
The category “prohibited person” includes anyone who:
is a felon
has been convicted of any crime punishable by more than a year in prison (whether or not they were ever sentenced to or served a day in prison)
is under indictment for any crime punishable by more than a year in prison
is a fugitive
is an unlawful user of any controlled substance
has been adjudicated as a mental defective
has been committed to a mental institution
is an illegal alien
has a dishonorable discharge from the military
has renounced their U.S. citizenship
is the subject of a restraining order restraining the person from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner or the child of an intimate partner, or
who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence
There’s a few nuances that you might need to be aware of if you think that any of these apply to you – especially the “convicted of any crime punishable by more than a year,” “unlawful user of a controlled substance,” and “restraining order” provisions. If you’d like to learn more about these prohibited person categories, see Prohibited Persons / Firearm Possession.

No, it’s not. In fact the M1 Garand is not much different than your standard semi-automatic deer rifle such as the Remington 7400.
The main differences is the 7400 has a detachable magazine that can hold as many as 10 rounds whereas the M1 Garand uses an 8 round clip.

There is no such thing as an “assault rifle”

That’s not correct. There is such a thing as “Assault Rifles”. The first was this...
This is the Stg.44. It’s official name was Strumgewehr 44, which translates in English to "assault rifle 44". It was developed and deployed by the Wehrmacht during World War II. It was the world’s first mass produced rifle firing an intermediate round, selective fire, that is magazine fed. It was Adolf Hitler himself who coined the name “Assault Rifle”.
Following the StG.44 came the next major development in Assault Rifle technology, the AK-47, which some still debate was copied from the StG.44. Just like the StG.44, the AK-47
1. fires an intermediate round
2. has selective fire
3. Is magazine fed
It’s these three characteristics that denotes a rifle being an assault rifle. For it to be an assault rifle, it has to have all three.
Along with the Soviet AK-47, the US also also developed their own Assault Rifle.
M-16 (USA)
Along with assault rifles, there is another category of rifles called “battle rifle”. They’re similar to assault rifles with the exceptions being that while an assault rifle fires an intermediate round, battle rifles fire a full size rifle round and may or may not have selective fire. Here are some examples of battle rifles.
FN FAL (Belgium)
HK G.3 (Germany)
M-14 (US)
(ETA: downvote it all you want, dumbass. You’re still a dumbass and you’re still wrong.)

An assault rifle is a real thing and has been illegal for an average citizen to own since its existence, beginning early 1940s (guns with automatic capability had been banned since 1934).
An "assault weapon" a term used by journalists and politicians to frighten ignorant people into giving up basic civil liberties.

Very well said. Assault rifles are a real category of rifles. But what the media calls “assault Weapons” are nothing more than semi-auto rifles that operate like your average deer rifle while looking like an Assault Rifle.

Strangely appropriate for the OT, the German army fielded a late war rifle that combined features of a rifle and a submachine gun, the Stg 44, Sturmgewehr, or "assault rifle" (or, I suppose, more literally "storm gun").

Technically you’re correct. But good luck doing it.
