I know that the media or people in general call AR's and the like "assault" rifles but it doesn't really make any sense. Any rifle can be used to assault someone or something. A basic hunting rifle is certainly used to assault the animal. (I'm not saying hunting is bad, i'm referencing). A pistol can assault but I've never heard of an assault pistol.

Gun baws, is there such thing as an assault rifle?

Yes. A rifle with Select fire capability. You are thinking of the term "assault weapon" which has no meaning.

Who do you assault with it? Who coined the term "assault rifle"? Is that a model or brand name?

And ARs aren't selective fire.

ArmaLite rifle
The “AR” in “AR-15” rifle stands for ArmaLite rifle, after the company that developed it in the 1950s.
“AR” does NOT stand for “assault rifle” or “automatic rifle.” AR-15-style rifles are NOT “assault weapons” or “assault rifles.”
