simple, effective, reliable and lower mileage. Probably from mid to late teens.
[/img] Seriously though...be prepared to up your budget or expect to buy a higher mileage vehicle. you can get a nice Mazda CX5 2018-2020 with around 50,000-70,000 for around your budget

recently got an Odyssey, and I love it.
Same, except mine is an 03. Found it at a small local dealer I knew with only 63,000 miles on it. Interior was like a time capsule. Old woman that owned it was insanely detailed. There were $14,000 in preventative maintenance receipts in the glove box. On a car she never drove. Part of it was a local shop that took her for a ride every chance they got. But hey, great deal for me.
Absolute gem of a deal.
I only paid $4500. I didn't even haggle with the guy, he said the number and I shook his hand before he finished talking.
Been insanely happy with it.

All of those will pull a 36-foot Contender with ease.

Just bought my second Hyundai Santa Fe and I can’t recommend it enough.
My wife has a SF Sport and I do not like to drive it. The power is so lacking that when you put it on cruise at 75 mph it will often have to downshift to maintain speed. Feels like it is redlining the transmission when it does that so I rarely use the cruise on it.

I've been really happy with my 2020 Mazda CX5. Great gas mileage (I average 27-30mpg). I can load it down with a lot of my horse stuff for a weekend show.
My friends that have RAV4s love them. Comparable size wise to CX5 and mpg.
We had a 2017 Hyundai Tucson and just traded it at Thanksgiving. It was starting to have stupid little issues over and over and the rear hatch would work when it wanted to. The paint over the rear spoiler faded really horribly too and Mr BB is big on car detailing.
tl;dr - I think CX5 or RAV4 will be your best bet.

Looking at the same for my 18 yo. My ex insisted on buying him an Outback when he first started driving bc of safety features. He loves it as he camps but it's had issue after issue and I want something reliable for him.
I'm looking for either an Honda or Toyota. I have access to wholesale cars and I can tell you that people keep their RAV-4's until they are 150k plus...just don't see that many low mileage ones. I think that tells you everything you need to know. I think there are more CR-V's on the road so there's more selection there. I won't pay over 10K but would consider an older one (like 2008 up). Good luck.

It's this damn economy. The bad poetry market has dried up and left me destitute. Had to sell the mansion, the menagerie, the pleasure yacht. All the swans.
I've been humbled.

Anyone have a link to that old thread about car buying?

I figured the sarcasm meter- based on your original post focusing on minivans and your love for them- would pickup on the sarcastic, "cool," aspect that I joked about. ya know, since your main buying point was practicality of crossovers and not cool points with the socialites...?
So insanely cool? I can go from hauling 8 people to having it ready to load with camping gear in about 2 minutes. That's cool to me.
I want safe. I'm getting older now. I don't need speed, don't need style, and I'll have teenagers driving before I know it.
To me, safe is sexy.
Want something I will feel comfortable with them driving eventually, but a good, functional family vehicle.
in any case, since you're more worried about the extollation of minivans and not a viable answer to your question, I'll stick to the main point: they're pretty damn safe, if you go by crash study scores. as safe as any crossover, I presume.
I couldn't care less about a vehicle. if it's safe, if it's reliable, it's good with me, and a rav4 meets both of those needs. you asked, I answered.

I was being sarcastic as well. I know they aren't "cool" but I like the features.
That's all I care about. Safe and reliable. Don't need it to go super fast. Don't need it to be able to climb a mountain (although I would like to be able to take it camping so AWD would be cool but not a dealbreaker)

A Rav4 is what i had in mind and it's getting good feedback here and elsewhere so that's where I'm leaning. Just seeing how other options stack up.

At one time that was the most American made (parts, assembly, etc.) vehicle on the market. Made in Lincoln, AL, near the Talladega racetrack (and the CMP Marksmanship Park, which is the tits, btw).

Wife has 2019 Rav4. Love that car. 36 mpg on interstate. Used ones are almost same price as we paid new, two months before covid.
Have heard a lot of good things about the prior generation Rav4. 2014 to 2018 I think.

Anyone know anything about the Outlander from Mitsubishi?
Looking at one from the teens in my price range with only 13k on it

Try the Subaru Outback.
Drive a model with the 2.5L flat four. It's not fast, but it's a great deal if you can put up with it. If you think it's too slow, they have a turbo model that is legitimately quick but they are more expensive to buy and less fuel efficient.
Subaru's CVT has been far better than Nissan's JATCO transmissions. But if you are picking up a used one with over 40,000 miles - insist that the dealer flush the transmission and diffs to save you that costs later.
The Toyota Rav4 is another good choice but it might be more expensive used than a Subaru.

A minivan is about the most practical vehicle that anyone could use. They are affordable and comfortable. Have plenty of room for passengers or stuff. Get decent gas mileage and are great in the city or on a long road trip. What's not to love?
