One time I was buying Mexican stuff and the cashier said "looks like you are making nachos"

I said "no, fajitas, I can actually cook"

Ensuing awkward silence

They always ask me about my kids. One time the lady commented on a couple of filets I was buying. So, I went to the butcher and had him wrap up two more, give me scan code and put them in the cooler for her. She was very appreciative and ever since the butcher goes out of his way for me.

I hate it. But understand that they must get bored as hell.

And most people in here love to complain about rude Yankees. Sounds like we have plenty of them in this thread.

I bought 8 8 packs of hot dogs and 8 packs of buns the other day with a bunch of capris suns, soft drinks, cookies and chips for my sons birthday party

The old bitch had the nerve to ask me if I was throwing a party for one of my kids

I'm never going back to albertsons again

Never really run into this

I have one cashier at Calandros that I go to. She's the sweetest. I'm getting her Christmas gifts and everything.

I loathe these assholes. If I'm buying a frozen dinner for one and a box of wine, what part of that purchase makes you think I want to socialize?

Seems like self serve checkout is the way to go. I never see an actual cashier.

Some of the posts in this thread shows me how impersonal people have become- I mean they're human beings, not vending machines. I'd say it's been pretty customary throughout history for a purveyor of goods to make idle chat with their customer during a transaction.

Two stories;
Was at Piccadilly ordering my food and server kept telling me I didn't want what I ordered, could get a better deal if I ordered some other food, etc. This went on for 5 minutes with everything I ordered. I just kept politely saying no thanks. Another server went off on her saying " I done told you about this, let the man order what he wants."

A friend was at grocery store checkout and he got a lot of bags of chips. Lady asked you having a party? He was thrown off for a second and just said yes. The truth was he just really likes chips.

They're definitely encouraged to make conversation at Publix. Some keep it general: to the weather, are you doing, etc.

Some comment on the items, One of the older ladies always comments on my items.

When I bought a pregnancy test, I specifically went to her lane just to see what she would say. I was impressed; she did better than I expected. "I hope you get the result you're hoping for."

We did. He's eight months now.

This

There are a bunch of bad asses and miserable fricks on here. It's called customer service. Any decent place will train its employees to do this.

That's one of the best things about shopping at Trader Joe's...they carry on an entire conversation about what you bought, but will also turn you on to new things at the store.

It's a lot better than having cashiers taking an hour to figure out what you are buying. You would swear none of them have ever seen leeks, mangoes, bok choy, etc before.
