“Functional alcoholic” is a term created by divorce lawyers and people who can’t handle their liquor

It means “normal people”

One of my uncle's was a BAD drunk - fifth of old grandad a day at least for years and years....he had NO tolerance for alcohol. One shot and he'd be as drunk as most people would be after 4. He did not get drunker than that though....he could drink a fifth in a couple of hours and would appear no drunker when done than he was after the first shot. He was not what one would call functional. He got arrested several times a month for public drunk and would get several duis a year without a drivers license. His brother, my grandfather, was friends and a business associate of a notorious Sheriff on the west side of Atlanta and between the 2 of them they kept him out of jail for more than a day or so. How he did not kill someone is a miracle...may well have and they just swept it under the rug.

His wife, my aunt, who was the sweetest woman you ever wanted to meet, was the toughest and meanest woman, when it came to him, that has ever walked the planet. I watched her nearly beat him to death with a garden tiller one Sunday afternoon. Ponder that for a moment. She literally attacked him in the front yard with a 5HP rear tine garden tiller. Swinging that thing, with it running, like a baseball bat. How she did not kill him is a miracle....I am certain she meant to and was very disappointed that he did not die from his wounds. Poor bastard looked exactly like one would imagine a person would look after being pummeled and ran over multiple times with a garden tiller. He laid in the yard unconscious for about 2 hours and she threatened all of us kids with a dose of that tiller if we tried to help him...not only did we not doubt her but she was finishing up supper when she started murdering him and when it was finished we were far more interested in eating than helping him LOL.

When I think of the term functional alcoholic I think Mad Men, right? They spend their days in the office nursing drinks all day, maybe not getting outright drunk but keeping a buzz for hours on end, go home or go to the bar after work and drink some more.

With some exceptions they more or less get right back out of bed every morning, put on a suit, do their jobs, never really get into legal trouble, and do it all over again day after day.

This right here.

Jesus, dude. If this is a real post and not bullshite, my god that is some seriously traumatizing shite. Watching your aunt attempt to murder her husband as a child is really not something to LOL about....

Had it been a one off incident it would have indeed been traumatizing....as it was things of that nature were not uncommon around some of my family. I have seen him beat on her about as bad, they each gave about as good as they got over the years. It was a different era, violence was not unknown like it thankfully is now. If my kids saw anything like that incident in a movie, let alone in person, they'd need counseling....for us it was just a Sunday afternoon unfortunately.

The thing about addicts/alcoholics is in my experience, no amount of pressure from family, friends, relatives will make them quit. It has to come solely from them. That only manifests itself through rock bottom. Something bad will happen before he quits.

I am one of those. Only until something really fricks you up, do you quit drugs and alcohol. Even then, some don't.

If he doesn’t miss work and hasn’t been to jail. I think he’s alright.

It might shock people how many of their doctors and pharmacists are "functional" alcoholics.

Can confirm.
