Alcoholism is a disease and it’s also the only disease you can get yelled at for having.
Alcoholism is making bad decisions/bad coping choices enough times that your self control is destroyed.
Throw in the chemical stuff it does to your brain and there you go. Anyone can get there, it’s not just bad luck in having the “disease.”
Telling people it’s an incurable disease is a pretty risky/hopeless way to go about it.

Functional alcoholics are generally very smart. Alcohol is what gives them power in a way. Usually the term alcoholic is negative but these guys can be inspirational.

College friend, very successful in business, long term marriage, great kids. Never seen without a drink in his hand and has the characteristic bloated abdomen of liver problems. Had a scare last year when he spent ten days in the hospital. He seems to have turned over a new leaf for now. Hopefully it lasts.

“God dammit Otto, you're an Alcoholic"
"God dammit Otto, you have Lupus."
One of those does not seem right...

It was more funny when the original comedian said it.

I’m a functioning alcoholic. Functional enough to design every GD telecommunications and power substations in the southern region to Denver.
Just wrapping up a substation for Mississippi.
I drink because I’m sad. Women chase after 6 ft men. Falling over themselves for a couple of inches.
Lol…so they’re in line for the next load of HPV.
That is a deeply strange post.

Completely incorrect. My example was from the book used to diagnose substance abuse problems.
That book actually says “spends a significant amount of time recovering from use”.
I can diagnose anybody that drinks once a week with a SUD if I stretch the criteria, which is what you’re doing.
I actually wrote a paper in undergrad on just that. The DSM5tr is a diagnostic manual primarily based on spectrum disorders. The spectrum is wide and easy to stick somebody in, which is what you are trying to do.
My paper essentially diagnosed every person in Louisiana that drinks as having an alcohol use disorder per the DSM5 which was the primary diagnostic tool at the time.

Functional alcoholic is just what we call people we know have a problem but are still cool.

If he is truly defensive then there is smoke and probably fire: all you can do is let him know that you are there for him whatever may come.

What does “functional alcoholic” mean?
A functional alcoholic is someone that drinks high amounts just to get through the day. Every day. These people always have booze in the system and still operate reasonably well within society. In my experience, they drink a lot of vodka.
Bingo

The thread was more of an ice breaker for “wtf can I do?”
Nothing really until he wants to change something. Can't fix other people. If he doesn't think he has a problem, he ain't changing a thing.

Still can keep a job, etc.
I was a functional alcoholic. Had a drinking problem but still went to work, and did the things I had to do.
Usually not drunk constantly and never black out drunk but have an addiction to alcohol .

When I think of the term functional alcoholic I think Mad Men, right? They spend their days in the office nursing drinks all day, maybe not getting outright drunk but keeping a buzz for hours on end, go home or go to the bar after work and drink some more.
With some exceptions they more or less get right back out of bed every morning, put on a suit, do their jobs, never really get into legal trouble, and do it all over again day after day.

Most here will turn the guy drinking 3-4 miller lites a few nights a week into a raging alcoholic. That person may like alcohol a bit much but I don't put them in the alcoholic category.
Most I've known that are functioning are putting down a 12 pack of keystone a night, followed by a whiskey drink or 2. Or they just jump straight into a half a fifth a night.

A lot of people are addicted to drugs/alcohol and work a full time job. Doesn't mean their life wouldn't be better without the drugs/alcohol, but it's not my life. If they are responsible enough to show up to work every day they're supposed to and not put themselves or others in danger due to their intoxication - then it's not my business.

A friend of mine referred to these daily drinkers as maintenance drunks

My stepfather drank a 12 pack of miller lite every day for about 30 years and supplemented it with a 5th of Cutty Sark Thursday - Sunday (a fifth over 4 days, not a fifth a day. Never took a day off from work, worked 10-12 hours a day 6 days a week, never got a DUI, would be nearly falling down drunk at midnight and up at 5AM and off to work by 530. Quit cold turkey when he turned 50 or so and is now 84 and lives with a 65 year old woman, drives anywhere he wants, plays golf about 4 times a week and is, by all outward appearances, healthy as a horse. 2 of his 4 biological sons died in their 20's from liver problems associated with alcoholism so it ain't genetics or he had a neighbor who was overly familiar....
