new Subaru Ascent

We bought one about six months ago, we love it. Looked at Mazda, volvo, Honda, and Toyota. We thought it offered the best value for vehicle and safety.

I can weigh in on the brand

My wife has a Subaru forrester and I really wish she would let me steal it for my elk hunting trips. The damn stupid looking thing is amazing off road. Its a great all around car. When she's ready for a new car I'm putting a tow hitch and mud grips on this one and its gonna be a hunting battlewagon.

I tow my inTech Explore toy hauler with double tip outs, loaded with shite, all over the country in ours. Off road too. Ascent has been flawless.

I could give a shite if liberal shitbirds love them. So do rally car drivers. I'm neither. I just like the towing capacity, cargo space (two big dogs and two kids), ground clearance (almost 9"), MPG when not towing, and price --ours was under 40k well equipped.

I've driven it hard for two years now with nothing but oil changes. That's not a big deal I know but I have no CVT issues at all.

I have a 15 outback with 4 cylinder and cvt and hands down it is the slowest most boring car in the world to me. I can’t get rid of it because it does everything I need, though.

Great car.

We have a 6 year old Outback. No problems other than the typical boxer engine oil burning (which is very low if you don’t live at elevation). Once it turned about 5 years old most of the exterior lightbulbs started burning out within a span of a few months. The headlight bulbs were a bitch to replace because of how tight everything is in there, but I was able to do it myself.

No problems with the CVT. Subaru has avoided the issues Nissan and Ford had with their CVTs although the Ascent is heavier and more powerful than other Subaru products.

If you live in rural Louisiana, you might be considered weird for driving a Subaru.

Our 14 could use another 30 horsepower. Wish they had the 2.4L turbo back then. The flat six that was available had terrible fuel economy.

I don’t remember the publication, but when we bought ours, the Outback was one of 5 cars available that was considered most likely to make it to 200,000 miles. The other cars on the list were either Toyota products or the full sized heavy duty GM trucks and vans.

The Ascent (other than base) does 0-60 in 6.5ish so not bad for an SUV.

I put a deposit down on Tesla tri motor Cybertruck, which will be a tad more exciting and absurd looking. But I can't pass up the specs.

2019 Forester owner here. Just be aware that the weight limit for towing is 1500 lbs (Outback is 2700, Ascent base model is 2000, non-base is 5000).

For Safety purposes, buy it! Built like a tank with every modern safety feature! If you're concerned about ascetics, then buy something else. You will look great blowing through a straw to make your wheelchair move!

If you want good solid employment, open up a Suburu brake and brake light replacement speciality shop in Denver.

Put 50K in 2 1/2 years on an Ascent from when they rolled out in July 2018. Had the transmission issue in the first year. They were changing out ascent transmissions. They claimed to have figured out the issue the day mine was in the shop for a new transmission. Did a computer reset and extended the warranty. Never happened again, but just traded in and upgraded to the Touring. Love the Touring. Drive across the country alot. Bad for me when I switch cars that expect me to do the driving. Damn near drives itself.

Probably 20% of local vehicles are Subarus, most are owned by straight white people who prefer driving them in winter over their F-250 which will slide in the ditch.

It seems closer to 50% in Bend, Or. You see them all over the road. Occasionally, a lady is driving one that looks like she might be a Lesbian.

I rented a Forester earlier this year on a vacation to Montana and liked it so much that I just bought my wife a 2021 Outback Touring. It just drives great and just felt as safe as any car I ever driven. Drove it in a short rainstorm and later in fog and the handling
and the lights were amazing.

I was referencing how much Suburu drivers like to ride their brakes in the mountains even on straightaways.

It does seem that Subaru got a batch of brittle windshields ~3-4 years ago. And yeah, you can't just pop the new glass in and drive off if you've got EyeSight.

One thing that surprises me is that assistive technologies haven't completely standardized around one approach. Subaru uses stereoscopic cameras. A lot of other manufacturers lean more heavily on RADAR. The Subaru system seems to work as well as anything out there, and having everything built around just a couple of cameras located inside the car does have some advantages... unless / until you break your windshield.
