What do you think of high efficiency washing machines?

My HE machine that I bought 6 years ago broke the other day. I never felt that it cleaned as well as the old school machines. It just never used enough water to clean them, and I especially felt like it never rinsed the clothes well enough.

I bought a new "old school" style machine the other day and I'm much happier with it.

I almost feel like it's green energy propaganda when they say the HE machines not only are more "green" because they use less power and water, but they actually clean better too! I don't buy it.

What are your thoughts on these machines compared to the old school machines that use a lot of water and an agitator?

I like my high efficiency washer. I don't have any major issues with the top loaders but I bought this pair because they're more ergonomic.

For some reason the ot loves to hate on the front loaders

My ex-wife definitely retained water and was a huge agitator. My new, younger, more efficient wife can't be beat.

I didn't like the first set I bought early in 2008. Lots of vibration from the washer. Those were Whirlpool Gold.

I bought Samsung in early 2016. No complaints.

The one that broke was a Whirlpool Duet front loader. At the time it was rated as one of the best by Consumer Reports.

I didn't really have an opinion of HE machines beforehand. But after owning it I just never felt like my clothes were as clean as with my previous washer and I never felt like they were rinsed as well. And it also took longer to complete a wash cycle.

Modern appliances are not built to last. They build them to sustain the duration of the warranty. After that, be ready to buy another one.

I don't like them. I think they probably are gentler on fancy delicates, but I don't own any of those. Whenever I put in really dirty, sweaty, hard work clothes, they come out still dirty. Clothes with blood on them, even if treated with Shout beforehand, don't always come out clean.

I don't like doing laundry and I hate washing the same shite twice. It's like a "high-efficiency" toilet. If I have to flush it two or three times to clear it, I'm not saving water.

Think mine is considered HE but it has an agitator and I can select water level (or let it auto-sense). Husband is a rice farmer and he gets nasty dirty --- can't not have an agitator. Have no issues with things being dirty after washing.

We have Maytag washer and dryer that I beleive are about 16 or so years old and going. We had to have a new heating element put in the dryer last year. But other than that they’re still working fine. And that’s in a house with two adults, one teen boy, and a almost 10 yr old girl.

Well, for that reason I bought a Speed Queen washer. It has a 7 year warranty and they are designed for commercial use so they say it should last for 25 years because they use durable internal parts unlike other brands. Their claim to fame is their durability.

My wife hates our HE washer, but she also hates our dryer, our dish washer, and our fridge. She says they don't work worth a crap, I think they work fine, although the HE washer when its in spin is loud as frick, I've leveled it and it didn't improve things much.

Ours is a HE top-loader (nothing against front-loaders, just never bought them)... No agitator and allows me to select water-saving cycles or not. I don't notice the clothes getting less clean/rinsed (even on low-water cycles), but I absolutely notice a difference in wear/tear. The agitator was ruining our stuff.

It was expensive. It was over 1k after taxes and everything. But I plan on it lasting a long time.

My mother has gone through 2 HE washers. I have a washer with wood paneling from the first Bush administration someone gave me in grad school and it works fine.

I neither think they are high or efficient.

They just use less water which can mean that the clothes don't ever really get clean or thoroughly rinsed of the non-soap soap.

Ours is 12 years old. It just won't die. Sears Kenmore.

It will be replaced with old school machine. The HE's don't clean as well as the old school style.
