Gratitude is huge, whether religious or not. Gratitude journals are helpful. Or just thinking of 3 things you were grateful for each day. It doesn’t really matter what the things are, just that your brain is actively searching for the positive.

It depends upon the type of depression you’re experiencing. There’s “the blues” and then there are the debilitating types such as clinical depression and bipolar disorder, among others.

The blues strike hard this time of year and the best treatments are what you listed. The very first step, of course, is to admit, if only to yourself, that you are a bit down.

I feel "blue" about 10-15 times a year. It's a specific grief issue for me. What I do is obsess and relive things and punish myself and isolate. I usually lose a day. It's the next day where I do the self-care stuff and life feels good again. I write. That's my personal cure. Of course, anything else that releases endorphins is good-exercise, sex, etc.

Intellectually I know I should not have these lost days. But emotionally I'm not there yet.

This. I don't really get depressed (fighting disease tends to make you grateful for every day), but from my observations and experience, those that concentrate on helping others tend to be happier by and large than those that concentrate only on themselves.

The first two things the OP listed (fresh air and exercise) are also highly recommended.

What do you do when you’re feeling depressed?

Go outside and find things to do whether it's yard work or just re-arranging things in my shed. Hunting season is the best time for that sort of thing for me because I can just chill with nature all day. Getting away from people and drama is a big help.

Vitamin D, there is a connection between low levels of Vitamin D and depression.

quote:

This essential, fat-soluble nutrient helps keep bones healthy and strong, promotes cell growth, and benefits immune function. It may also play a role in depression, as researchers have noted that many people with depression have low vitamin D levels.

Depression has this nasty ability to convince you that your cures are hurting you and that what’s actually hurting you are your coping mechanism.

Hug my kids. Call my brother. Talk to friends.

Realize that things aren’t so bad no matter how heavy the weight feels in the moment.

If you are in the dark, just keep walking. Eventually you’ll find light again, as long as you don’t give up.

All of this. Very well said.

Especially this:

quote:

Hug my kids

When I hear stories of parents that commit suicide, I just can't get it. I've never been one to contemplate it, but even if I were there is absolutely zero chance I ever would consider it now that I have kids. I don't mean this as passing judgement on those who do think it or did act upon it; I simply mean that having children makes me personally not even think it is ever an option.

If you do have kids and have these thoughts, hugging them will do wonder to solve it.

Yes I am aware this was about depression, but this got me thinking since I have known people to have gone through this. It's so fricking sad.

When feeling really depressed I typically lay in bed and think about dying. I don’t die and eventually feel better. Hope this helps
