Is there a specific job that you would like to do at/in a plant? That makes a pretty big difference in what direction you take from here on out...
Operator - Bachelor's degree or PTEC degree
I/E Tech - Certification from one of the trade schools like RPCC or BRCC
Maintenance - See earlier comment about being hired on at Turner
If you have a college degree, purchasing might not be a bad route if you don't mind sitting inside all day.
Good luck.

Why is the OT so obsessed with plant jobs?

Have a pulse and truck nuts

I like to think that most of the OT is college educated, and plant jobs annoy them due to similar salaries, often better benefits, and less responsibility once they leave the plant

Everyone wants to work for the plant. Unless ur an engineer or wanna be an operator, your not gonna be hired on right away. Gotta do the contract thing for a few years and if your good enough you may get hired on. But probably not.

Add to that the inexpensive Ptec degree in under two years.....less student loan debt. Also, progression from start pay to the top is usually only dependent upon the speed at which you can learn and qualify.

Is English a requirement?

You need a degree to be a plant operator

I know a bunch of operators that have 4 year degrees only to go back to a technical college to earn a 2 year ptec degree so they can get into a plant.
I don't think you've ever met a plant operator.. Go in their unit and let them explain some cascade automatic control loops where the flow of a fluid is used to control the temperature and pressure inside a 100' tall distillation tower and I bet your head would spin.
Not all plant operators are smart but the stupid ones don't last very long. If anyone could do it the supply would be much higher and they wouldn't be making 100k a year.
I think you're getting confused with oilfield operators. That is where all these truck nuts and f250 stereotypes are coming from.
And does having a 4 year degree really make you 'smart' almost anyone can get a 4 year degree. You seem like that guy who really had to bust his arse to get a 4 year degree because you thought it would make your rich and now you're venting because you're jealous of these "baws" without 4 year degrees that were smarter than you because they knew they could spend less money and time in school while also making 100k a year..

This. I've worked in a plant 3 years now doing inspection. Wish I would've started a lot earlier in life

The f250 with truck nuts are typically the pipe fitters and boilermakers who hop from plant to plant working turnarounds.
Posted on 2/15/16 at 2:13 pm to shoelessjoe
How good are you at walking around with a 4 ft monkey wrench banging on and over tightening pipe fittings that were already tight enough?

work for a plant and the generalizations in this thread are pretty far off of my actual experience
Tbh, I see it as nearly spot on. Lol

There are only certain craft types that do certain types of work that meet the stereotype. I feel like the operators take heat and get misrepresented by the construction types. The operators should only take heat for what they make. I don't think the majority of them are the truck nuts type. I work at a plant and I have a masters degree, do not have a truck or truck nuts and do not meet any of the stereotypes that get made fun of around here. The majority of my department also doesn't meet the stereotype....so there's that.
