So much hate in this thread.
what happened is that a bunch of people were pushed to follow the "you could be president or the next bill gates" wave and the dumbshit hick in high school is making $100k while the smarter kids are slaving away at a $40k job(with school loans)
The hate is not really because of the dumb shite hick, it's the bullshite that adults around them were spewing a decade ago. Many of these people would be doing GREAT if they just went the blue collar route , and the dumb shite hick would't have a $60k Truck and a $40k boat....living check to check.
The only reason the hick has what he has was that the system pushed everyone in one direction, leaving pot belly, poor hygiene, deadpool loving jackasses, with top-5%-er type money.
Hicks think they are smart Baws, but they can't recognize how precarious their positions really are. There's a tidal shift coming and these people won't see it coming. When the new wave of "frick the dream"(no TOPS) comes, then "smart" kids will unseat the Baws, and they will be forced back to trailer park that they rose.

Go apply at the Turner office in BR. Start from the bottom, don't be a dumbass. Also being white helps, it's not right but it's true. If you're young and act smart while not pissing off the big wigs you can have a career.
Though after working as a laborer one summer, I determined that plant life wasn't for me. Maybe it was because I spent all day driving the water truck around the plant.
If you're looking to work for the plants themselves, I hope you have a degree.

Not necessarily. If you want to get on with one of the big boys. Shell, BASF etc, then it certainly helps.
Apply at a smaller plant and get some experience.

Sounds like his women's studies degree isn't panning out like he thought.

The term “gold collar” is being applied to the field of process technology because they are trashy as frick and wear shite like gold chains and yeti hats because that's just the way cretins know how to express self worth
I like it, can I borrow it?

Did you qualify for TOPS? If yes, you're overqualified.

I did plant work in the early 80's.
My father was an operator supervisor and called contractor later was JE Merit to get me on as a laborer on maintenance.
Went up the ladder on maintenance crew while in college and they built a new unit where I was
interviewed for the position and got it.
Had 6 months experience as contract operator in a small plant moved to California with Chevron in LA while finishing up College at UCLA. Plant work wasn't my thing and while in the California national guard finishing my 2 yrs reg army 4 yrs guard my first sgt was on hiring team for LAPD. I left for that due to plant work was boring and in the 80's they didn't pay what they do today.
Now I know some younger people enrolled in process operator training at River parish community college which would help.

This thread went as expected
I work for a plant and the generalizations in this thread are pretty far off of my actual experience
