Man I'm gonna tell you this. Do your homework. Don't buy from the retail stores on the corners. Find someone that doesn't have the overhead. As for the diamond, get a higher end diamond and sacrifice size if you have to. A diamond that is cut well, clean, and colorless will catch your eye more than a larger dull diamond.

I bought a .90 for my wife. If you get just below a carat, you get more bang for your buck. Once a diamond reaches 1 carat, it gets marked up.

Luckily my wife isn't overly materialistic. We talked about how much we could and wanted spend and went from there. She opted for a nice ring that was't over the top which allowed us to spend more on the honeymoon. The store I purchased the ring from has a deal where you can bring the ring back in and trade up anytime you want. If she ever wants a bigger stone then I can always trade up for an anniversary gift.

That's a good deal

Did she want a chocolate diamond?
Never got the fascination with those.....it's a brown diamond. If you called them brown diamonds....no one would buy them.

About 3k in 2001. We didn't go all out on the wedding either. We also made a lot less money when we were younger. I wouldn't have married a woman that didn't care about us going into massive debt for a damn piece of jewelry and a party.

So many sharks in this thread who pulled one over on the jeweler

But yeah...brown diamonds are shite. They are industrial grade diamonds that someone had the bright idea to rebrand and put a premium on them, then market them to idiots.

$600 bought in 2002. Wife doesn't care about jewelry, never did.

Appraisals/insurance are absurd, but it made me look like a total badass when she found out about it

You do realize that nothing is worth what it is appraised at? Cars are worth more, diamonds are worth substantially less. What it is worth is what you can get for it.

They are for retail replacement (including the huge markup) and not what they are actually "worth". Go try to sell your ring on Craigslist or trade it in and you will realize what a racket it is...you MIGHT be able to get 1/5 of that appraisal if you are lucky.
I suggest getting something used from some other sucker that bought new and paid all the markup (yes you still got hosed if you bought it online or retail). If you fiancé is worried about it being used just have the stones reset in a new setting. You will still be getting screwed but not as bad.

With that said, I believe a woman made up that rule.
Actually, I think it was the Jewelers that came up with that one.

Around $7k about 4 years ago

I spent $27k. $23k in cash and got 0% interest on the other $4k for like 18 months. Paid it off about 6 months later so I could worry about the honeymoon costs. Got it from a Jew dealer who has been my parents' jeweler for the past 20 years.
Half of the reason for that was for her, the other half was for me. I wanted her to have something nice to walk around with because she'll like it. I also know that when people (broads) look at it, they'll know where it came from.

We bought a set of wedding ring and engagement ring for her. Spent $3500 in 1992. Let's ignore the diamonds for now and just look at the price gold, that's quadrupled over that time, roughly.
I'm not saying you should spend 9K but I don't think that is unreasonably high either. I think 3500 was about a month and a half worth of salary.
