Started looking yesterday and seeing prices of jewelry just makes my butthole ache. The ring I liked the best was going to be around 8500 to 9k, little over a karat center with two emeralds.

I think there's a generic rule, 3 months of your income or something like that.

With that said, I believe a woman made up that rule.

Go shopping with your girl friend (soon to be Fiance ) . I'm sure she knows your financial capability. She'll pick something in your price range. If 9K is too much, spend less. The love that she has for you and vice versa is what matters, not some diamond ring.

My wife (gf at the time) and I went picked out rings together. I told her how much we can spend. She found the ring she loved for that price.

Maybe in my next life, I can be an OT baller and pick out a diamond that can double as a paper weight, until then , I'll just (sigh)

I searched and searched for what I wanted and it was $12,500 plus tax in 2008. I walked in with 85 long wheel based tens and took it home. Cash is king to jewelers.

Man I'm gonna tell you this. Do your homework. Don't buy from the retail stores on the corners. Find someone that doesn't have the overhead. As for the diamond, get a higher end diamond and sacrifice size if you have to. A diamond that is cut well, clean, and colorless will catch your eye more than a larger dull diamond.

The emeralds were small on the sides, that is what she wants. she doesn't like the solitaire look.

As for the price, i can afford more if I really wanted to but I can't imagine putting that much into a small nothing that you wear on your finger.

Has anyone had any luck searching out antique stores and finding a nice antique setting and getting a new stone? She loves the antique look, something with craftsmanship involved.

A little over $4k, in 1992. It is a 1.03 carat solitaire. It had no inclusions visible with a 10x jeweler's loupe. He took me in the back and showed me that it had small inclusions under a microscope.

Women all have the diamond appraised "for insurance purposes", even though they never specifically insure them. The one I bought came out to $13k. I told her to sell it and that I would buy her another one like it and a cool used car. She declined.

I still have her.

That is how I am leaning towards. Anyone deal with any of the online retailers for stones? Ive been looking at Rarecarat.com and they have stones much cheaper and better than I have found local.

Something to consider when you get the diamond online is that you don't have a local jeweler to go to for anything that you will possibly need. If you buy the diamond only online, many jewelers wont put it in a setting since you didn't buy from them. They will tell you it's not worth it for them to be liable for a 10k diamond to make a $700 setting. I bought local and we were very happy with the price, service, and experience. Wouldn't change a thing.

While this is probably true because most places are severely marked up... you don't know anything about the diamond itself so it's pretty ridiculous to make that claim.

Like $1,500; I was still in college when we got engaged. 12yrs later and pretty successful, I told my wife if it's important to her, we could get her a "nicer" ring. She declined, doesn't give a shite about the diamond.

In retrospect, marrying a woman who doesn't care that she got a cheap ring was the best decision I made and is probably part of the reason we've beaten the odds and been married so long.

She's frugal; we've never once fought about money. My parents did constantly.
