Today, I learned that the spleen is not something you need to live. Turns out you can live without it, but it is vital for long term health in the way of fighting infections and diseases. So, if you get your spleen removed, you are much more susceptible to the common cold and other diseases that we privileged folk with a spleen don't particularly deal with very often.

You learn something new everyday, right? What about you?

300 lb Mediacom workers still have to climb the pole to fix my internet. It was funny watching him shimmy up there. I felt bad for the ladder.

I learned the Russian term "Akula" (as in the submarine class), means "shark" in English.

I also learned that during the Crusades it was sometimes common place for different Christian lords to ally with neighbor Arab polities and fight other Muslims.

Indeed, the spleen is a vestigial structure, like the Appendix.

You can see a real life example with the bucs qb from a few years back. He ruptured his spleen during a game, had to get it removed, was out like 3 months

Yeah, Chris Simms. He did an interview today and thats where i learned it @superspecificskeptic a few comments above. The man without the spleen said that. The internet says:

quote:

The spleen plays multiple supporting roles in the body. It acts as a filter for blood as part of the immune system. Old red blood cells are recycled in the spleen, and platelets and white blood cells are stored there. The spleen also helps fight certain kinds of bacteria that cause pneumonia and meningitis.

all that means to me is "without a spleen you get sick more often"
