Right, and the Germans took the name "Holy Roman Empire" as a propaganda move to try to claim lineage with Rome. But that didn't make them Romans. Same thing with present-day Hungary. They are an ethnically distinct people who arrived in the area 400 years after Attila.

I personally agree with this one. They were the most powerful state of early Modern Europe, and the had a sharp decline because they failed to modernize.

The economy is doing relatively better these days, though. Relative being the key word. They still have tons of debt and poor job growth.

As far as modern examples of just straight up national suicide, I have to nominate Rhodesia (Zimbobwe) and Venezuela. Two nations with massive natural resources that managed to run themselves into the ground.
