Large companies can find footholds like that in smaller cities are kill it because those cities are happy to have them and give them major tax breaks

Goodyear,

Akron, Ohio.

Actually, I have no idea the size of Akron but first thing that came to mind and I don't feel like googling.

At one time, Goodyear, BF Goodrich, and Firestone were all headquartered in Akron and it was a pretty big city. Goodrich got bought out by Michelin in the 80’s and they slowly shuttered the Goodrich main office there. I think Firestone got bought out and moved out as well, but not sure.

I grew up going to Akron every summer. My grandpa was pretty high up at Goodrich in the 70’s and 80’s. Haven’t been up there in years though.

Hershey is in Hershey, PA
Century Link is in Monroe, LA
John Deere is in Moline, IL
Hawker Beechcraft is in Topeka, Kansas I think.
Dow Chem is in Midland, MI
Corning is in Corning, NY

There are a handful of companies in the smaller Michigan cities like Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo.

Brown and Root is in Baton Rouge - but that’s bigger than 200,000. Kodak is (or was) in Buffalo, NY. It’s only slightly larger than Baton Rouge. Buffalo doesn’t even have a Whole Foods although they have an NFL team over in Hamburg.

Eh, Ludwigshafen is a suburb of Mannheim, which has a metro of 2.4 million. Don't think that really counts.

The two largest orthopedic medical device companies are in tiny little Warsaw IN (about 15-20k people).

DePuy Synthes and Zimmer Biomet

Stryker is in Kalamazoo MI (~75k)
Arthrex is in Naples FL (~20k)

All are multibillion dollar med device companies.
