re: What are your alternatives to SketchUp for 3D modeling?

If you're familiar with AutoCAD, you can download Fusion 360 from Autodesk. Free for non-commercial use with the same basic modeling functions as CAD.

Sketchup is still free, but it's web-based rather than a stand-alone program.
And who the hell uses 3D modelling on a tablet? That sounds absolutely infuriating.

If it’s still free I’ll give that a shot. I will also checkout some of the other recs, so thanks guys.
It’s an HP Tablet that I have a mouse and two other screens for. So I’m using it like you would a desktop or laptop.

Nice, thanks... do you know how much has changed in more recent Revit versions?

what's wrong with 2D modeling?

the biggest change is that views load as tabs similar to an internet browser instead of being on top of each other...its so much better
also in 2020 you can import pdf's and retain their functionality (similar to a dwg). otherwise its bug clean-ups etc. go ahead and download 2020 if y'all have a license and start there

Apparently I was wrong and I'm only licensed on AutoCAD Architecture. I guess we passed the Revit licenses on to someone who actually used them.
Might have to ask about that, but it's a lot of $$$.

I use the online sketch up app and you can use it past the 30 day window. It stores models online for you under your account. I use my trash email account to log in.

Depends on level of detail. Not being able to create lines shorter than 5/256" has made me use AutoCAD extrusions to create models for patent and manufacturing drawings.

Any good tutorials out there? I have access to the full version, but don't even have it downloaded because I never use it and never learned it. It would be a great thing to pick up when I have time.
Autodesk use to offer a free tutorial that was used to train at all of their affiliated training partners. About 7 years ago they quit making them and licensed out training books. None of the ones I've seen hold a candle to the Autodesk tutorials so anytime I train someone or someone wants to learn on their own I send them those files.
Yes, there has been some changes and improvements but it covers all of the basics to get you trained.

imma go out on a limb and say the OP would be ok without that functionality

Probably, and I doubt many printers can get to .1mm precision but I'm just disappointed Revit has that limit because I'd much rather use it than Acad and sometimes it's impossible. However, I will say the concept of creating complex 3D shapes are essentially the same in both programs.

LSUBoo, the tutorial I have is from 2009, let me know if you're interested and I can email you a link.
CaptainsWafer, I have an older (2016?) version of Sketchup for desktop I can share.

Blender 2.8 if you want free, it’s what I use to do everything from characters to 3D printing
Maya
Fusion 360

If you want to run locally without an internet connection Blender is probably the best free package for 3d modeling.

Revit is the only answer. Go big or go home.

maybe i'm wrong but I believe you can still download the free offline version -- they're calling it Sketchup Make
if not, you can always download a previous version... it will work until they stop making models for it

Not even remotely true unless you have a narrow view for your own industry. It’s not even the only option from Autodesk. Maya is far better at doing some things.

I was weaned on AutoCAD 1.5.
Learning Revit as an old man knocks my socks off.
I don't pretend to claim animation!
