Me and the wife will be moving in the next year or two. No destination yet so all options are on the table. What things should I be looking for when comparing particular cities?

Education
Crime
Roads
Property value

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance for all real answers.

Enough nightlife and entertainment to go to on weekends, and outdoor activities close to hills, lakes, oceans and/or mountains.

Major airport close by with plenty of cheap flight back home.

Educated population, which leads to better areas, more businesses locating there.

Low property tax and insurance rates

Breweries, hiking, coffee roasters, kayaking, and interesting places.

I want infrastructure, no racial strife, and an educated populace.

The quality of the schools tells you everything about the area.

I'm thinking about moving to Alexandria because of the surplus of date night restaurants where I can wear camo cargo pants, order a $13 steak dinner, and throw peanuts on the floor.

Hiking trails, bike lanes/trails, parks, lake/river access, and a good grocery store.

Schools are the most important thing, even if someone does not have children. If schools are good the community is or will be good. Other than that, arts and restaurants are a big indicator of a good community.

Birmingham (do not live there) is a great example. They have improved so much by making these three things a priority.

Depends on your age, children, their ages, where family lives, what’s your job situations, will she or you be stay at home, how much money do you have for discretionary spending, how much you have saved for retirement, are you all outdoors people, do you eat out a lot, do you care about having a lot or little friends, etc....there’s a lot to consider before figuring out a place that suits you best. So we can’t know what you’re missing....

Would rather not get into specifics. More just looking for general things you would want in a city if you were to make it your new home and start a family there.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Exactly what I was looking for.

Close enough to a good city to hit that scene when necessary, but far enough away to get a lot of land.

Private school education at a public school price. If the public schools where you move are legit, typically everything else (crime, real estate values, entertainment, etc...)will fall into place. I know some value the private school aspect for many reasons, but I'd rather put the $ many earmark for the 2.5 kids in private school into my mortgage/lifestyle budget.
