It was for about 4 years and then added back into the curriculum when they realized how idiotic it was to eliminate in the first place.

My district in NY had a very specific curriculum for kids not on a college path. They spent 1/2 the day in traditional classes then get bused to a trade school learning welding, crane operating, truck driving, and plumbing amongst other things. We really have focused too much on high school being a pipeline for college.
I think one semester of basic shop class should be required learning for every school kid. Even college bound kids.

Discipline, personal responsibility, common sense.
Most of that isn't taught at home either anymore.

Cursive (which really had no value).
I agree.
If I remember correctly, in middle school we took a class just on writing cursive. We started with writing each letter in the alphabet. Then words and then sentences and it was repetitive and we used to have homework all the time in which we had to just write the same thing over and over.
It got to a point where I would always get in trouble because I wouldn't complete my assignments because I didn't need to keep writing.. I knew how to do it and it just seemed pointless.

Did they ever teach common sense?
If your teaching it doesn’t it stop being common sense?

same here....but my oldest is in junior high now. they got computers in 6th grade and all they do is type. My 4th grader has better cursive than the 7th grader b/c he hasn't used it since 3rd/4th grade.

Can you elaborate? There are some people I wish would have never learned cursive because their writing sucks and you can't understand it.
I think anything you can learn is good, but its not something that a lot of time should be spent on teaching. I can write cursive, but it seems like at some point in college when I took notes, without even thinking about it I just stopped writing in cursive.
But how much do people write these days? You can type something and just change it to a font that looks cursive.

Not taught in Public Schools where I live. Private schools are the only ones teaching cursive anymore.

We had to take both Civics and Free Enterprise. The direction public schools are going, I don't see these lasting, if they are still taught.
