Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, most of Oakland county, and the upper peninsula are great. The rest of the state....not so much.

Other than that, far superior to where you come from, and the other area you are studying.

I grew up in Michigan and lived in Ann Arbor for a while, so...

Awesome outdoor recreation in the northern parts of the state. Starting about half way up the lower peninsula (~3 hrs north of Ann Arbor), the flat, dull agricultural midwest ends and the north woods begin. Hunting, fishing, and thousands and thousands of lakes. If you're into boating on any level from canoes to yachts, you'll love it. Except, I know, winter.

fricking ice fishing. It's awesome.

Generally excellent public schools, especially in a place like Ann Arbor.

When I was a kid growing up, I'd have said excellent streets and highways (the auto state), but I guess that's not true so much anymore.

If you travel a lot, AA is super convenient to Detroit's beautiful new airport.

For a city its size, AA has tons of dining, nightlife, culture and entertainment.

Frankly, when I lived in AA, we hardly noticed Detroit unless we wanted to go to a game or a concert.

Real live hockey games. By far the best live-at-the-arena spectator sport.

Proximity to Canada, which is very cool.

FWIW, being surrounded by lakes makes Michigan slightly less arctic than places like Chicago or Wisconsin. Still a long cold winter. You can embrace winter and have some fun: skiing, skating, snowmobiling....

You won't ever see those annoying Jeff Daniels "Pure Michigan" commercials.

Alabama will have much better weather compard to Michigan and Phoenix. You wil hate the Michigan winters and Arizonia summers, not sure which is worse. Michigan summers are A+, just need a spot on the lake michigan like Holland or Traverse City

My dad lived in Michigan for a year. Couldn't wait to get back down South. It's the Winter.

You get a legitimate, four seasons.
If you have kids, the education is top notch.
Educated locals
The housing is reasonable
Great outdoors activities all year long
Tons of entertainment (Ann Arbor is one of the best college towns in America)
45 minutes away from Detroit (professional sports, concerts, great Airport)
Great breweries
Pretty solid food scene
UP is close by and an unreal area
Driving distance to Chicago (3.5 hours)

Metro Detroit is as nice as any suburban area anywhere. You can live in a slightly trashy/blue collar area super cheap, if necessary. There are four or five baller areas and everything in between.

Northern/western Michigan in summer is awesome. Everybody seems to have a cottage somewhere, the same way people in LA have camps. Fall in a place like Ann Arbor is as good as it gets. If you're a young dude, lots of opportunities for trim in A2. You could live in a western suburb like Northville/Plymouth/Novi/Livonia and commute, but it probably wouldn't save you much money.

Yeah. People act like the entire area is a third world country. Bloomfield Hills, Ann Arbor, Grosse Point and the rest of the Pointes are exquisite areas.

A guy I know from Traverse City put it best.

He said "We endure 9 months of hell for 3 months of paradise".

The accent is SO bad. And they say pop. But AA is a nice area, so quality of life would be decent.

Midwest is better than the south in many ways.

But that weather is a deal breaker.

It was 17 degrees up there yesterday, while I was outside shirtless under a gorgeous 75

They make great beer in the state. I would probably put them in the top 5.

I would probably drink a lot if I had to endure the winters up there.

And that's worse than sweating your balls off in 102 deg heat with extremely high humidity for 2/3 of the year? It was 85 degrees half of December this year in Louisiana. That's fricking miserable.

The funny thing about Detroit is that while the city itself is absolutely awful, the far-flung suburbs are some of the best you will find anywhere. I really mean that.

Also - Grand Rapids (I know, opposite side of the state) is like the cold version of Portland or Austin. Cool young vibe, tons of breweries, upcoming culinary scene, lots of jobs in tech. While some people definitely know about it, to America at large its still mostly undiscovered, which makes it even better.
