The UP is fantastic if you like the outdoors. Ann Arbor is nice, it's better than anything in Alabama

and the winter.

Other than that, far superior to where you come from, and the other area you are studying.

Ann Arbor is beautiful outside of winter. Seems like a college town though. Kind of like living in a smaller baton rouge

I love the weather here.

Summer....you just aren't beating it. It's so nice. Everyone is outside. You're never sweating, never hot. It's bliss. You can go and relax at the beach with some great Michigan beer or Michigan wines.

Or you can be a little more active and hike and kayak while being perfectly comfortable.

Fall is exquisite and perfect for football. It's crisp outside and gets you in the mood for Michigan football.

Winters are tough, but they are perfect to be inside to catch bowl games and Christmas with a roaring fire while looking outside at the snow falling. Hot winters suck in my opinion.

Spring is the rough one in my opinion. When it hits, it's great. But it sometimes takes a long, long time for it to get here. I remember many times flying to Miami for Sping break in college and it would be snowing in Ann Arbor.

AA is great. Loved living there. Winter is bad, always something to do, and you are plenty far from crime in Detroit/Pontiac.

Jeff Daniels doesn't narrate those commercials Tim Allen does and we see them in Ohio all the time along with Missouri. What's so special about Missouri?

Midwest summers can be just as humid, if not more so, than in the south.

At least in Ohio

But yeah this southern winter has been a dream. Hasn't dropped below freezing once

Michigan is awesome. You are surrounded by freshwater, and the coastal scenery is gorgeous.

Most of what I would say has been said a few times already. The one thing I'll add is that Detroit is (albeit slowly) on the rise. They have A LOT of work to do, but lots of new shopping centers, small businesses, neighborhoods for young professionals are popping up. Downtown/Greektown are nice. Lots of great restaurants.

Detroit crime rates are dropping.

Was born up there.

Pros:
-If you live in a decent suburb the public schools will be light years ahead of what you are used to in the south.
-Ann Arbor is a world class college town and has a great food and nightlife scene
-Lots of employers around there, proximity to Univ of MI, Google and all the Detroit suburbs where the jobs are
-Easy access to Metro airport in Detroit to travel
-Lots of pro sports, Red Wings, Pistons, Tigers and Lions within 30-45 minutes
-Amazing outdoor options in the summer (lakes like nowhere else in the country)

Cons
-Extremely liberal in Ann Arbor and heavy Union influence, not a con just an FYI
-The winter/spring/fall sucks. Its gray, cold and all encompassing. It will suck the fun from your life until you adjust. I recommend planning at least two 3 day weekend trips to warm weather destinations in the winter, itll make it more bearable
-Culturally completely different than what you're used to in the south. You'll just have to experience it to understand.

I live in Chicago now. The winters here are worse than Ann Arbors. Easily. In Ann Arbor, you can still get out and do some stuff (cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, etc). Chicago's....shiiiittttt..... The winds that tunnel through the downtown towers cut through you like a samurai. That said, is Chicago "unlivable" because of the brutal winters? No. It's still a great city.

I also find that people in Louisiana bundle up with hoodies, jackets, gloves, and scarves when it's a mere 60 degrees outside.

And I find that pretty horrible. It's winter, it's supposed to be cold.

You're insane. You know what sucks. Late October and temperatures still in the 80's. That sucks. Michigan's fall is prestine.

Right now is the very worst dog days. Dec-Feb is hell. Just about St. Paddy's Day/March Madness/baseball opening is when everything seems to get better. And fall is incredible.

otherwise your description of MI weather is in complete agreement with my father's (Michigan native). However, he now lives in La. because, as hes says, you don't shovel heat.

I always felt Birmingahm, AL was more a culturaly northern city that happens to be in the south which is probalby why the state of alabama abused it . Don't see much of culuture shock outside of the weather moving from that city to say columbus, ohio or ann arbor, mi.
