I always felt Birmingahm, AL was more a culturaly northern city that happens to be in the south which is probalby why the state of alabama abused it . Don't see much of culuture shock outside of the weather moving from that city to say columbus, ohio or ann arbor, mi.
I'm sure living in AA has a lot going for it. Michigan is a naturally beautiful state and I'm very envious of their summers. Further, I think AA is probably a fun town with lots to do.
But, the cultural changes are stark in my experience. In Michigan or Ohio (or the PNW, or New England, etc.). The lower midwest is less so, but they're very noticeable for folks who grew up in the South. It's not necessarily that they're worse, and I'm not talking about saying "pop" vs. "coke." But people socialize in different ways and humor is different and rules of propriety vary. People dress differently for different functions and standard protocols are different.
Of course, you can adjust, but it's a question of whether it's worth it to you. I live in Atlanta, which is a city of transplants, and there can be a pretty sharp divide in dealing with natives vs. established transplants. It's not the end of the world, but I do think it is noticeable and I'm sure it might be for OP.

I live here now (outside of AA) and have for the past 10 years or so. Michigan is by far the best place we have ever lived and is superior in almost every aspect than the other places listed, having lived or spent a lot of time in LA, AL, and AZ. Michigan is now home for us and we have no intention on leaving.
Yes the winter sucks but you adjust and do winter things. It really doest get too bad until late Jan/early Feb through mid March. We take a winter vacation to somewhere warm once or twice each year which really helps break up the winter. Other than that, late Spring through Fall is outstanding.
Agree with most of the other advice given already and happy to answer any specific questions you have.

Do not go to Michigan unless you are out of options

Only place near A2 that you have to worry about "bullet holes" is Ypsilanti and even then its worst day is safer than most best days in South.

I lived in AA for a few years as an undergrad...great place to live. Always felt like what Austin strives to be simply happens naturally in AA, if that makes sense. U of M is a beautiful campus too.
The major downside is the weather, as you noted. I grew up in MI and wouldn't move back for that reason...I think it is miserable once you get past the holidays.
Not sure what your Detroit comment is all about...you are relatively far removed, and there after plenty of things to do in the actual city...young professionals are starting to return. Again, living in AA means you won't be able to fully enjoy the ethnic pockets of suburban Detroit either, which is a negative.
Michigan is one of the most naturally beautiful places in country...plenty of outdoor activites if that is your thing.

I am a warm weather guy who will move back down South eventually, but I'll give Michigan its due - it's a great place to live outside of the Detroit/Flint/Saginaw corridor. The winters in the Midwest can be tough, though - no way of getting around that.
The Western shore resort towns (Holland, Saugatuck, etc.) are really cool. Ann Arbor is one of the best college towns in America, and you have another one in Lansing that is a big college town. The northern resort area near Arcadia/Beulah/Lelanau is awesome...really beautiful and superb golf. The backwoods of northern Michigan and the UP is awesome - pristine. The Detroit suburbs are really nice. Grand Rapids is a very cool spot - underrated. You're five hours from Toronto and four hours from Chicago.
Wisconsin is actually very similar outside of Milwaukee - great place to live and tons of stuff to do. Actually, much of the upper Midwest from Michigan to Minnesota is a pretty great place to live if you don't live in the urban war zones. Illinois sucks outside of Chicago, though.
That's from someone who has lived all over the country.
