Crowdsourcing works, my friend. Why would I waste my time trying to find stations that don’t have MCs talking incessantly when I can just ask?

This is something that’s easily useable by more than just me.

What free streaming options can give me the amount of content they provide for $3-$10 a month? That’s a rounding error to not have to plug in a phone, carry a wire around in my truck like some hobo, etc.

Underground Garage (SiriusXM 21)

Greatest radio station in the history of the world or anywhere else. Plays everything from 50s rockabilly and 60s garage nuggets through 70s punk/new wave to current bands.

quote:

A satellite radio station created and supervised by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt to present rock 'n' roll and garage rock on radio. It plays a mixture of garage rock both old and new, and the music which influenced today's garage rock.

The radio channel is programmed and run by Van Zandt. The programs are hosted by a team of personalities personally selected by Van Zandt. On-air hosts on the channel include original Rolling Stones manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham, punk rock singer Handsome Dick Manitoba, The Mighty Manfred (lead singer of The Woggles), veteran FM radio deejays Kid Leo and Bill Kelly, and musician/producer Genya Ravan (originally the singer in Goldie & the Gingerbreads). A version of the popular Breakfast with the Beatles program, hosted by Chris Carter, appears on the channel each Sunday.
quote:

Musical philosophy

The music format of the 24/7 satellite radio channel is based on Van Zandt's musical philosophy and approach to rock 'n' roll. Van Zandt believes that rock 'n' roll is a continuum from the early 1950s onwards and that it is artificial and counter-productive to segregate music by the decade it was created. So the Underground Garage presents music from every decade since the beginnings of rock 'n' roll in the early 1950s to the present day.

Stylistically, the format's offerings span such genres and categories as garage rock, girl groups, British Invasion, psychedelic music, rockabilly, surf rock, and punk rock. The music is fully integrated so that listeners hear recordings by rock pioneers such as Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard and Elvis Presley juxtaposed with records by present-day garage bands like The Contrast - and multiple artists from the four decades between.
quote:

Van Zandt has stated that he hopes to draw younger listeners (who are attracted because of the current artists) to hear the historic acts that paved the way for today's rock. And older listeners (who are attracted because of the vintage artists) to hear the artists who are carrying on the tradition.
Little Steven once described the Underground Garage as featuring "All the artists that influenced The Ramones, all the artists that were influenced by The Ramones, and The Ramones".

Turbo
Octane
Ozzy’s

My top three

I'd add in Hair Nation, but they play entirely too much Poison. I constantly switch between those 4 depending on which song is on.

None of them really have enough variety, with billions of songs available they still have a regular rotation of the same stuff.

Outlaw Country. Shooter Jennings' Electric Rodeo and Mojo Nixon's shows are favorites.

It's not all David Allan Coe and Waylon. Hell, last weekend Shooter played Type O Negative covering Summer Breeze. It has some range.

Bluegrass Junction, if you like that music.

70's on 7: Replays Casey Kasem's American Top 40 on weekends. A lot of the songs are shite, but I love hearing Casey's voice. "Coming up next, a long distance dedication ..."

Casey's voice is so comforting:

"Recently there was a death in our family. He was a little dog named Snuggles…" See, when you come out of those up-tempo goddamn numbers, man, it’s impossible to make those transitions, and then you gotta go into somebody dying.

“You know, they do this to me all the time. I don’t know what the hell they do it for, but goddammit, if we can’t come out of a slow record, I don’t understand. Is Don on the phone? OK. I want a goddamn concerted effort to come out of a record that isn’t a frickin’ up-tempo record every time I do a goddamn death dedication … I want somebody to use his frickin’ brain to not come out of a goddamn record that is, uh, that’s up-tempo, and I gotta talk about a frickin’ dog dying.

I still cannot fathom why anyone would pay for XM radio in this day with the amount of free streaming options, digital radio, podcasts, etc.

Johnny Knoxville has a show that's pretty entertaining.

It is an entertaining show. I like how they find some obscure or eccentric person to talk about for each show.

As far as stations, it largely depends on what you like. I mostly switch between Outlaw Country, Prime Country, Willie's Roadhouse, Hair Nation, and Ozzy's Boneyard.
