re: what are the benefits of an MBA

So I'm never going to tell you not to get an education. I have a specialized business Masters and its done wonders for my career.
What I will tell you to consider are three things:
1. Have a plan. Especially after 30. You have to know before you start- will this translate to a physical actual opportunity that I desire.
2. Carefully consider every dollar you take on in debt. I tell all our entry level kids this...
go as fast or as slow as your tuition reimbursement will take you through the program. It might take a while at $2500 a year but that's $2500 you not paying for.
3. Understand that main reason you get a MBA is networking and box checking.
Its not going to make you more knowledgeable or better at sales.
If you're a goofball...you'll still graduate a goofball.

Are you planning on staying in O&G?
At that point it wouldn’t matter to me, and is really my reason for getting more education. I realized how limited my options are when shopping around. But let’s just say it’s an option to stay or go. The idea of working my last ten years from home in a management capacity is very intriguing to me

I can get into this if you're genuine, but management isn't for everyone. I've been there when required but honestly it's not my space. If you think you can handle multiple employees like yourself and you want to start MGMT at 46yo because you got MBA... good luck?!?

I always planned to go back for an MBA and never got around to it. Looking back on my career now, I can’t say that it would have made a bit of difference in my career path.

Just do sales and skip all of that bs

I’m an Instrument Tech and have considered getting my MBA just to expand my options and hopefully leave the state eventually

If this is remotely true, they either own the company, have some dirt on someone high up, or there’s some serious nepotism going on.

I think you may have a different definition of the word executive as the rest of the world

As a “check the box” for your employer to get a promotion, it can. Otherwise you’re mostly right
I threw away my engineering career in my 30’s to go back to a top20 full time MBA. Finished my first year and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made

Was competing for a job at corporate against my current boss and co-workers who were higher ranked in the company. Ended up getting the job due to having the MBA, even though I was only a temporary employee at my current position. My idiot boss thought he was a shoe-in for the job and even sold his condo in preparation for the move to corporate.

20 years in the field should mean a whole hell of a lot more than an MBA. Not that having one is bad, but you really need to think about the financial cost of getting an MBA compared to where you would be without it.

Respectfully disagree. I went to LSU, clearly not a T25 school and likely never will be given the overall competitiveness of the MBA market. What I will say is having that designation has made my life easier running my business, meeting with bankers/finance people, and the network it’s put me into has been worth every penny my previous employer paid for.

Get an MBA with some related practical experience. I used to interview a lot of people who rolled through the Wharton Exec MBA program straight from an unrelated field (engineering, biology,…) and it was worthless. They felt it made them automatically qualified for certain roles, and they were clueless.

I have a JD. Please refer to me as Dr. Shoes henceforth.

No one’s going straight from undergrad to a Wharton executive mba. They wouldn’t get let in the program.

From what I’ve seen it’s more about networking than actually learning specific things.
