I'm tired of being a pleb. I know(think) I'm smarter than the goons I work for. Got set up to get my BAS and should finish it in three years, maybe less. Then get an MBA. By that time I'll have 20 years in O&G and will be 46.

My background is industrial controls. What would I do with that resume and education level?

Best thing about a MBA is that it is almost an automatic pass through HR and puts you ahead of 90% of candidates. Finished mine about 4 years ago now and it has helped a lot with landing new roles.

I don't think the MBA does anything for you at this point. It's more for connections at a younger age. If you do it, it should be solely because you enjoy the thought experiments they have you run through.

I doubt anyone is going to look at you post MBA and say "ah, this is what we've been waiting for."

From an elite school it makes a difference. From a run of the mill school, probably not so much.

1. Go to a good school with name recognition ie Booth, Wharton, North Carolina a step below

2. Go somewhere to network that's local. Going to carry less cache nationally, but if you know where you want to live can be just as beneficial

have an idea of what you want to do and whether you need an mba to do it. you're buying a network, so use that to see how much you care to spend on one. to move into o&g management or sales, you could just do an online mba at lsu or something comparable.

It helped me a lot, but my undergrad wasn’t in a technical field (think English, history, etc.) I needed it to get my foot in the door, but after a while, work experience is all that really matters. I will say that the finance classes changed my life because I didn’t know much at all about money before that. I would definitely take some finance classes while you are an undergrad.

The problem is your age basically makes it impossible for you to compete with kids that have high finance experience. If best if you fished around you could find an investment analyst job in small market PE or something like that without wasting your money and time.

Everything shouldn’t be measured by school rankings and monetary gains.

There’s nothing better than furthering your education and doing something you’ve always wanted to do, regardless of the MBA program.

You 23 now? MBA can help your resume with HR. Still got to prove you’re not a fricktard to the hiring manager. If I’m looking at you, I like seeing an MBA. But I’m wary of those who are just book worms. Get some field experience in O&G. It matters to the leaders who matter the most.
