On I-12 at O'Neal, back when the interstate dropped from 3 lanes to 2 (which seemed to cause a wreck or two every week), an 18-wheeler loaded with drill pipe didn't follow the lane shift and hit the guardrail on the overpass.

The collision caused the drill pipe to spill from the trailer, landing right on top of the car of my wife's coworker. the girl was 5 or 6 months pregnant at the time and she was a real sweetheart.

The funeral was brutal because they were somehow able to make her and the baby presentable enough to an open casket.

Crash on I-12 at the Tchefuncte River Bridge a couple years ago that killed 4 people. It's the reason the I-12 widening project in St. Tammany was moved forward by years and is currently under construction. A Mandeville woman, 2 BR residents and the driver of the truck believed to have been the cause of the accident all perished.

9 years or so ago there was a bad accident on I-10 in Nola East in the Michoud Blvd exit area. There was a swamp fire that was ongoing for several weeks and the smoke combined with a foggy morning caused a 40 car pile-up. 2 killed, 69 injured.

thing that sticks out to me is it happened on a weeknight and the driver was a repeat offender. Dude should never see the light of day again.

There's more to that story. The driver and a girl were having a 'road rage' moment and passing each other on the shoulder and stuff. He lost control and went in the other lane wiping that family out.

I know a girl that was behind the entire incident. She had to go to court to testify against both the driver and the girl he was 'feuding' with.

She doesn't give details but says that I don't want them it was so bad. She's right, I hate hearing stuff like that.

Both of them went to jail, for different amount of times. One 5 years, one 2 years, something like that.

My grandparents and aunts lived in Hammond. We lived in New Iberia. I was going to be in the 1982 Sugarcane Festival Parade so my grandparents and one of my aunts came down to watch. My other aunt was a senior at SLU and worked at the local radio station. She couldn't leave so she stayed behind. That Saturday morning as we were getting ready, our phone rang. It was the Hammond Chief of Police asking for my grandfather. He informed us that my aunt had gotten off of work and was heading home. She stopped at a red light, and took off when it turned green, but didn't see the dump truck that ran the red light. She was in a Chevette. She died instantly.

Had an employee many years ago that loved to ride his crotch rocket on Saturdays. One Saturday he was driving down Esplanade and someone ran a read light and threw him into the windshield of a car at the opposite red light decapitating him. He was a hard worker and had a young family. Damn shame.

Knew a girl that was a couple years younger than me that ran over a pedestrian during a bad rain storm on the way to school. Didn't realize it until another car that was behind her kept blowing her horn forcing her to stop.

Pretty sure I know the Hebert girl's father. If he was VCHS alum too, he would have been older than me, but we knew each other. Sorry for your loss.
Another Haydel that attended VCHS passed while I was a student there.
I used to drive right by that wreck site every day. Hunted that big field that parallels the canal for years as well.

Hit home with me too.

Uptown NOLA Lamborghini crash, May 2016 killing 23-yr old Kristi Lirette. Jason Adams blew a .11 BAC after crashing into the Tchoupitoulas flood wall doing 118 mph. He pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and sentenced to 10 yrs with Judge suspending 5 yrs. Since it was a "non-violent crime" Adams only had to serve 35% of the 5. Based on good time credit while incarcerated, he walked out of prison only serving 9 months of a 10 year sentence. Lirette grew up in BR and some on TD likely knew her.

College roommate flew home the Houston. His wife and three little kids pick them up at the airport. On the way home, their car was rear-ended by a drunken truck driver. The wife survive with no injuries, but got to watch her husband and three children burn up in the wreck. There is nothing to please her firefighters could do because they were all trapped in the wreckage. Her husband kept telling the firefighters to ignore him and try to get the children out. He was also able to say some prayers with his wife before he passed.

A few years later, his twin brother's ex-wife was flying with bear kids when the private plane crashed, killing all on board

There was a very famous motorcycle crash near the Melville levee in 1969. Couple of hippies on choppers. I think they made a movie about it.

Also remember 4 VCHS kids all dying when the car they were in ran off US90 outside of Houma. They were all coming home from an LSU game. Driver fell asleep and the car ran off the road, flipped and they all supposedly drowned right across from the old Hebert's Junk Yard.

And then the worst for me, was when one of my best friends, Jeff (son of Tiger great Scooter Purvis) died with a golden girl on 1-10. That was March 87 I think. That one still makes me sad and I still visit his grave from time to time.

In '09, at The Buzz in Hammond, some guy ran over 5 people walking down a side road of the bar, killed 3 of them. One of the guys killed was the driver's roommate. We had just left the bar an hour or so before. I remember hearing all the sirens passing heading to the scene. Horrible

For anyone that is enjoying the Highway 42 expansion/upgrades in Ascension Parish...

Part of the backstory involves a mom who lost her son, niece, and another friend 25-30 years ago in a wreck along the stretch by the horse farm/stables.

The driver was 18 and the two boys were 13. The mom has been a constant figure to get the road upgraded and was even invited to help start the destruction and replacement of the roadway.

One in Lafayette in the last 10 years or so - high school kids, maybe prom night. Car full of teens, probably the one that drank the least nominated to drive - killed 2 or more but the driver survived. I think he was 17 and sentenced to some serious time in prison. I remember thinking how devastating at that age to lose your best friends like that - and how they made an example out of him. I wish I could find the story - I feel like he was sentenced to decades behind bars at 17.

Never mind, I found it and my memory sucks on this. It was only 5 years - I guess in 2006 that seemed like a long arse time to me

Blake Broussard (17), Brittani Head (18), and Ian Brasseaux (18) died when a friend flipped his SUV

Mid to late 90s I think. Truck full of cattle went over the side of I-10 east bound coming off the bridge, where it goes down to 1 lane coming into town. Cops spent all day rustling up the cattle that survived the fall. Everyone was being warned that they had been injected with something that would make the meat poisonous. Pretty sure there were a few full freezers by the end of the day.

I also remember a wreck in early 00's on tiger bend that killed a CHS student I think.

I remember this one. I heard his dad gave him the vette on his birthday and crashed it on coursey Blvd that night . Three teenagers in a vette , what can go wrong.

It’s the movie Easy Rider. In the film, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda are riding the levee road on their motorcycles. They encounter some backwoods boys and both die in crashes. The crash scene was filmed north of Krotz Springs.
