Speaking as a former teenager, I'd say there's probably a sweet spot between ages 9-14 where it's safe to leave a kid at home without a guardian. By age 15, I was "borrowing" our neighbor's motorcycle and driving across the parish line to a beer joint when my folks were gone.

Speaking as a parent (ages 9,9,11), it seems like it's safer to leave 3 of them alone together (I was an only child). Between the inevitable tattletale sister and SimpliSafe sending me a text anytime the door is opened, they do pretty well on their own for short periods of time.

OTOH, we are WAY out in the country, and the only way in/out goes past the grandparents. And, I'm still thinking about putting up a hidden surveillance camera or two.

5, as long as the 7 year old can watch them.

Just leave a box of cereal and a bowl of water and lock the doors.

This reminds me how weird it is to me when I find out 12 year olds still have their parents get them ready for school.

I was waking up, dressing myself and putting myself on the school bus in 1st grade

Probably arrest the parents now.

My kids wouldn’t have tolerated that. My daughter spent a whole weekend figuring out how to braid her own hair when she was young so that she could cut me out of getting ready l.

I have boys and they have been staying at the house by themselves since 10, only during the day and not for extended periods of time. I also live in a nice area on a quit street and a iron fence/ gates around my entire yard so people don't just show unannounced. They are actually pretty mature for their age. However I have a 30 yr old brother in law I wouldn't trust to stay at home ( no mental or physical handicaps) just a dumb arse, guess every kid is different

Depends on kids, location and situation. I was at home by myself on 9/11. My mom was a single mother and worked. I was 10. Not the best day to be left at home alone.

I honestly think if you raise a kid to have some independence and they're smart they should be able to manage themselves if no external threats at earliest age 6 or 7 for several hours without too much worry.
Oh my God.

I assume you don't have kids. I have two 6 year olds and no matter how great and independent they may be, there is no 6 year old ready to be alone for several hours, that's basically child neglect bruh.

Its a process that varies from kid to kid.

How do you develop it? Give them instructions while you do things like yard work, outdoor maintenance, etc. where you aren't immediately available, short of an emergency. See how they handle that. Get an idea of their capacity to differentiate a 'whoops' from an 'oh shite, panic time', by seeing what they bring to your attention, and in what they let slide.

If they do poorly with it, don't overburden them by saying 'You are 12 now, I'm going out for the weekend with your mom. We may come home someday'. If they do more with it, give them more freedom and discretion in watching themselves.

But for christ sake, if you have a nosey arse neighbor, tell her to mind her own business, and instruct your children never to speak to them.
