Something wrong with that if you ask me.

II is used if someone has the same name as an ancestor, but is not the son. Jr. is used for a son.

Do you know the difference between an Uncle and a Great Uncle? What about first cousin, second cousin or first cousin once removed?

Haven't read all the responses, but I'll just say: if someone is named after an uncle or a grandfather "II" is appropriate.

III checking in. Can confirm those guys are assholes.

I even take it up a notch. I go by "Le Troisième" since my name is French.

I'm a Jr. but decided to name my sons with unique names. If they were to have a son and decided to name him after me, would it be the equivalent of 'Donald Trump II' or 'Donald Trump Jr. II'?

I actually never knew about this distinction before. One of my friends named his son 'II' but I think it was just after himself and not another family member (although I'll ask him about that).

Or if you are the first born son, you are a "Jr." and if you are the second born and share the father's name, you are a "II".

Incorrect. My BIL is the 2nd son and is a Jr. I guess the 1st boy wasn't good enough

Gurley went by Gurley II instead of jr because he wasn’t a fan of his namesake.

I thought you only become II if you make your son a III This is to avoid confusion on who is Jr when there are 3 generations

I've heard of it when a child is named after the grandfather when the father isn't. Still kind of pretentious. II is the redheaded stepchild of name suffixes. II is douchey. Jr. is perfectly acceptable, as is III. IV is straight baller. Anything after that is silly unless you're a king.

One of my best friends was named the same as his father, who was named the same as his father, my friend's grandfather. My friend was a III.

my dad started going by our middle name when i was born

That is ridiculous. My son is a junior and we call him by our middle name. I couldn't imagine making people start calling me something different instead of just calling my son by the same name starting at birth.

No offense.

This. There's a reason behind it.
