I will see them coming from a long ways. If I run for the woods, it will be like a force field. Those bastards arent setting foot in there. Spiders, snakes, mosquitos, name it. They arent getting anywhere near me. I cant kill a horde but I dont need to. Those people will die pretty quick.
To be honest, Im as prepared for it as the any city slicker. Which means Im not, but I can still function. My wife and kids would struggle big time but its my job to see that they make it.

95% since no one knows how to take care of themselves these days without grocery stores supplying food. But thats just my opinion. There is the 5% who could figure it out.

Good topic to hash out. Given the situation as described in the OP, I would say AT LEAST 90% die in a couple of weeks. The large urban centers would turn to war within 48 hours (we have seen what happens with natural disasters with THOSE FOLKS), very few of us garden anymore and even if you know how, it would take a couple of months to grow any food. Most do not know how to milk a cow or goat. Sourcing clean water would be tough for nearly everyone. It would actually be worse than 250 years ago since all of the dead people would contaminate so much of other stuff.
Those with outdoor skills would do better but most would run out of ammo quickly...Fishing would help. Some survivalist preppers would do well and I think the Mormons stock pile food staples...Not sure where they would get their bikes and black ties though..

Hell you wouldn't even have to go back to the 1800s style. Just knocking out power would kill an easy majority and a lot more of this country.
Old folks homes would be a shite show literally. Anyone that tried to go in one of those and help after an event that knocked out power for about a month would be a god damn hero and completely fricked up for whatever life they managed after it.

Not to mention the many skills that we know very little about. Tanning hides, sewing, making 'shot' or gunpowder....some of these things could be learned but time would be short.
I think there would be a lot of suicides and men putting loved ones out of misery. There is way too much quit in the mindset these days.

Read this novel. It is set in western NC outside Asheville. An EMP takes out the United States, and everything is basically knocked back to the pre-industrial days kind of like you describe in your OP. It is a pretty interesting read.

I think at least 80% are gone in 6 months. How they hell would they get food to eat? Today's life skills don't translate well to earlier times.

Most of the ones who rely on gov't assistance. All the ones who think they can change their gender. All the ones who say meat is murder. Most of the ones who are offended by hurt feelings.

So you funnel them into choke points (because a vast majority are coming on roads), and you use explosives and fire. Pick off the stragglers with small arms fire.
Those that are willing to embrace their warrior spirit and kill without hesitation will make it much further.
Many would have to die so that your family can live.
