The other day at Costco I donated $20 with the stipulation that if they blew their horn or alerted anyone in any way I was taking the donation back.

The lady thought I was joking. I got my $20 back. She was mortified.

They're signed up for charitable donations each year. If they get you to round up 25 cents, you've just subsidized their donations so they don't get in trouble.

was in Petco a week ago and bought a few things and got asked at the checkout if I'd like to donate to the SPCA.

SPCA building in Gretna has signs that they’re sponsored by Petsmart in their main building.

Every heartworm positive dog is treated when adopted so they’re more desirable, so these funds probably do help in that regard

Same here at Winn Dixie in Covington on Hwy 21.
Sometimes the employee manning the self check outs will approach me to ask for a donation.

My response to anyone asking for donations is
“I only give to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital”

The only other charity I donate to is when I go to Petco and the donations go to the animal shelter.

I don't think it's quite working that way. They are either:

A: Getting the money from you, holding it, and passing it onto the charity through the use of a liability account. This would mean they get no deduction for your contribution.

B. They care calling the money from you Income. They taking the deduction when they pay it to the charity. This means they wash and the store is right back where it was before.

A is how accounting principles say it should be handled and it shouldn't go in the income or deduction. Now this doesn't stop the corporation from pledging a certain amount be paid to the charity then using the funds from their customers to satisfy that. But they aren't getting a deduction from the customer funds.

Surely I’m not the only one tired of being hit up for donations at the drug store, the grocery store, the sporting goods store, etc. while checking out. Why has this become so prevalent?

Because you can spend money on beer and steak and can't be arsed to give a few measly cents to feed the homeless?

You monster.

Me personally, I like to physically take the food out of their mouths.

They care a lot more when you take their smack though.

Chevron clerk asked if I wanted to add a donation to Wounded Warriors or similar. When I said no, she shouted, "You don't support the troops?!"

I went on a rant about donating my money to who I want, and if Chevron wants to step up and donate their own money, then that is great, but don't bum money off of me so they can present a big check at a photo op and take a tax deduction for giving bummed money.

You could tell that she had never thought about that.

I'm not giving money to a corporation that will use the collected donations from all POS's in the country as a charitable donation to offset their tax liability.

Most sales clerks tell me, “OK before you swipe press the red button.”

They hate it as much as you do.
