First: Kudos to EBR schools for having a regular schedule and shame on the other schools who closed either early or entirely for a storm that didn’t come through until after 10pm.

Now, as for the greater issue: We’ve got to stop holding ourselves hostage over these weather advisories. The models are not good enough to make such major decisions!

And this was predicted to come after 9pm for a long time. So why did several places shut down at noon or all day even? The meteorological community is losing their credibility. I mean, making decisions based on these weather forecasts is like making your home budget based on the assumption you’re going to win the lottery tomorrow, and each day after that. We’re on the cusp of saying things like: We have a freeze coming in ten days: better shut down schools now.

If we’re going to keep blaming lawsuits, then let’s pass a law that says trial lawyers cannot sue for negligence over any weather advisory that is not in the severe category. They are solely acts of God and suing someone over that is stupid.

Look, I respect weather. I heed warnings and stop work and go inside when there’s thunder. What I don’t respect are these people playing God and shutting down life thinking they know better than everyone else.

I can say confidently that the day to day forecasts of reliable sources like the National Weather Service have a much better chance of being correct than the chances of any of us winning the lottery. They certainly aren’t perfect, but they do fantastic work. They don’t tell anyone to close their schools or businesses. They simply provide information about the weather to the best of their ability.

I’m in the Emergency Management field now…. People were freaking out yesterday. The driving factor is the extremely poor, living in FEMA trailers, that can’t do shite for themselves. Nobody wants to lose their job over some idiot on the news with no place to go so we over react. It’s dumb.

You have te embrace the hysteria. Play ominous music when it rains like the TWC does.

The weather was pretty severe at the time when school would have normally gotten out.

Meh, kids deserve random days off school; remember how happy it used to make you when you could stay up playing Halo 3 on a Sunday night?

Also erring the other way can have much more serious consequences.

It’s just more coddling of a weak society.
Why can’t people watch the weather and decide for themselves if they want to bring their kids to school or not? The lawsuit excuse is bullshite. No one is getting sued over a weather event. They aren’t forcing you to go to school.

Stop canceling things over a thunderstorm.

Prior to the Internet we just had these things called thunderstorms. Every once in a while you had to watch for tornados too.

I miss that.

We are a lazy society…. This is all just a pre-text to taking time off from work

When the phones all go off we all get on and watch our local weathermen. They hype up these radar signatures and warnings as if there is a tornado plowing thru a neighborhood when in reality somebody’s trampoline flipped over and we lost power for 10 minutes.

I was talking to my mom about this yesterday. She used to get out in floods to pick us up sometimes.

I blame social media. If something happens the school board is bashed endlessly for not canceling school and garners public attention. They’re in a catch 22 so they err on the side of staying “safe.”

There were two rounds of storms - one early one late - exactly as predicted and in the time frames predicted. Both pretty gnarly as far as wind and rain go but thankfully no tornados although there were a couple of warnings.

If you assholes would stop driving your big trucks to compensate for your small cocks and drive EVs, we wouldn’t have this climate change issue and these severe swings in weather.

You mean Sonic 2? I was working night shift when Halo 3 was popular
