The suggestions in this thread at how to fix universities in the US are retarded.
Posted on 5/28/23 at 7:33 am to crazy4lsu
Your suggestions were very wisdomous, as usual though.
Anyways, stay tuned regarding this institution. I have a feeling more is coming down the line for this institution and we can only hope its problems are local to its governance.

You used to have to be scholarly to get in and stay in. Now it's an expensive glorified high school or community College for most of the student body.

The number of kids majoring in ballet, ceramics and Ancient Greek literature is small and losing money.
Please cite me stats b/c I'd imagine business and engineering are much more expensive than liberal arts programs.
I'm not talking career earnings, but cost to the university.

Clearly you understand the "role they are supposed to play to our society" and aren't trying to make universities trade schools

Exactly. Or a trade school.
There needs to be a split between actual universities (who get degrees and an education) and glorified trade schools (who get certificates in specific areas).
The "trade school" option is basically an extra year of community college and should be seen with that level of respect.

Idaho, NH, Maine, Montana, and Vermont are all comparable states and their flagship universities have half the enrollment of WVU
Your comparisons are strange, in my opinion. For example, Idaho State and Boise State both have higher enrollment than University of Idaho. Private BYU Idaho has the largest undergraduate enrollment in the state.
Maine has a branch campus at every wide spot in the road.
Montana State is the better school in the state; I wouldn’t consider University of Montana the flagship.

Colleges only get paid from Collected/paid loan amounts. Watch how fast the system changes/improves.

Colleges need to move online. Cut 90% of costs, sell buildings, save taxpayers billions a year.
How many campuses could we close, cut the college and turn into immigrant micro cities?
All of the services are there, healthcare, entertainment, housing, sports and recreation, public, transportation, stores and kitchens.

These ideas only sound less radical after shite hits the fan and we become a one world government. You ate my thread. I’m 34 and have two young kids. I don’t really care about such radical changes.

Look at the number of faculty. Now look at the number of administrators. You’ll find your problem there.
Posted on 5/28/23 at 9:42 am to jangalang
Those college administrators are really smart people, they’ll figure it out.

A kid can still major in ballet,
if he pays for it - or can scrounge up a sponsor on his own - NO STATE MONEY for anything other than STEM courses.
And nobody should loan money for 'college expenses' other than the college itself. Let THEM gauge the 'scholastic aptitude' and 'worth of the degree' being sought wrt the ability of THIS person working in THAT field being able to pay back the loan.
IF the college itself doesn't agree that this particularly combination of person/degree is likely to be in a position to repay the loan, then THEY should be the only one LOSING MONEY on the 'deal.'
In fact, they should not even waste space in their classrooms if it is filled with people who they KNOW cannot on their won, using the degree they are seeking, repay the cost of the tuition and housing associated with that form of study. Receive that shite for the wealthy neer-do-wells who just need to add more gloss to their appearances.
I do NOT want to donate one red CENT to it.

Despite their hefty compensations they have already admitted they suck snd cannot figure it out. They have already hired at least two different consulting firms and neither could figure it out as well.

I’m going to go ahead and say there is zero incentive for any college admin to minimize expenses throughout the year. Doing so would simply guarantee them a lower budget going forward, no matter the potential expenses in a given year.
I’d bet they are encouraged, around the end of the fiscal year, to spend all remaining funds, no matter how ridiculous the expenditure.
This is how most Higher Eds work.

The kids running up 6 digit student loans getting useless degrees, only to have the Dims want to forgive all those bad choices is where cuts need to happen first. Spending all that money for a degree that only leaves the recipient qualified to schelp fast food or some other minimum wage job is a huge drain.
Universities are happy to offer all these useless degrees, in many cases, keep adding them to keep pace with the work playbook, and will be resistant to cutting any of them.
