Were the WW2 seaplanes the most Gucci planes ever?

I’ve loved these things ever since Tale Spin and would have loved to have served as a crew on one. They’re big enough on the inside to stretch your legs and of course the whole landing on water part.
Short Sunderland
PBY Catalina
Martin PBM Mariner
TailSpin plane

They are cool, but your usage of “Gucci” is NOT

When I was a kid my dad helped me build a PBM model airplane. He hung it from the ceiling in my room with fishing line. I thought it was the coolest shite ever back then. Think he enjoyed building it more than I did.
I forgot about it til I saw those pictures. Awesome planes.

There was an old TV series called the Golden Monkey that had a sweet seaplane in it.

Nope, Example A of the most Gucci cockpit ever. You learn every gauge and nuance and she'll bless you with the ability to be a true stick and rudder pilot. A rare trait in 2020.

Always liked the PBY.

C 130s are definitely up there (certainly top 10)but I like the seaplanes better. WW2 had this perfect blend of advancing technology but still had this human feel to it. The best generation of aircraft imo.

All good. Didn't mean to gum up the thread with land dwellers. Was trying to be cute with the term Gucci(I do love my Hercules though). The beauty of WW2 seaplanes is not lost on me. PBYs specifically.

The Germans called the Shorts Sunderland " the flying porcupine " due to its large # of machine guns. In one famous encounter in the late afternoon, one of the crew spotted the eight Ju 88s. Bombs and depth charges were dumped while the pilot, Walker, "redlined" the engines. Two Ju 88s made passes at the flying boat, one from each side, scoring hits while the Sunderland went through wild "corkscrew" evasive manoeuvres. The fighters managed to knock out one engine. On the third pass of the fighters, the top-turret gunner managed to shoot one down. Another Ju 88 disabled the tail turret but the next fighter that made a pass was bracketed by the top and nose turrets and shot down as well.
Still another fighter attacked, smashing the Sunderland's radio gear, wounding most of the crew in varying degrees and mortally wounding one of the side gunners. A Ju 88 tried to attack from the rear but the tail turret gunner had managed to regain some control over the turret and shot it down. The surviving fighters pressed home their attacks despite the losses. The nose gunner damaged one of the fighters and set one of its engines on fire. Two more of the attackers were also hit and the other two finally disengaged and departed. Luftwaffe records indicate these were the only two that made it back to base.

I remember that show. I hated that it was cancelled after one season.

Holy shite...checking in on this. Series was one of a few copy cats of the Indiana Jones theme. Good stuff.
