I’ve only built one automobile model in my life and that was a 1969 Mustang a friend had me build for him and paint to look like the one he had as a teen. I hated doing it but he’s a good friend so I made an exception.

My grandfather used to do the kits with balsa wood and that paper that would tear if you looked at it wrong. He had a few biplanes hanging in his study.
I did an A-4 and a small carrier as a kid. One day I’ll pick it back up.

Sadly it’s a dying hobby. Kids today just don’t build models.

Darth what is your opinion on Airfix kits? Until recently I hadn't ever touched one. I bought a 1/48 English Electric Lightning cold war era jet and I hated that kit. Only using humbrol paint number callouts with no color names forcing me to go look them up was a royal pita. Fit and finish wasn't great either and the instructions were so so. I've been mostly doing 1/48 aircraft from all eras and 1/35 armor from all eras. I'm 50 and still enjoy the hobby.

They have really improved their quality in the last few years. And they have a pretty good selection of kits, at least when it comes to aircraft.

It’d it’s the kit I’m thinking of, that’s one of their older kits from back when their quality was poor. What’s ironic is Revell use to be really good and Airfix really bad. Now the opposite is true.

I printed out a color chart I keep at my model desk for this very reason.

That’s awesome. I prefer 1:35 scale when it comes to armor, 1:48 scale for fighters, and 1:72 scale for bombers.

went to the naval aviation museum in Pensacola last summer and saw a similar seaplane but don't remember the exact name. that museum is great if you havent been

I prefer Tamiya and Hasegawa. I also build Airfix, Italeri, Dragon, Eduards and Zvezda. If I can find them I also like old Monogram kits. Some Revell kits are good, others are pure garbage.

I brush paint all my kits. As for canopies, I don’t mask. I just use a very fine brush and a steady hand.

My great uncle was the navigator on the PB2Y that is on display in the National Naval Aviation museum. It was the first US plane to land in Tokyo Bay for the treaty signing. His navigational chart is on display there also and it is very interesting because he had a spot marked where George Bush Srs plane was shot down. After the war Howard Hughes purchased the plane and it is said he used it to develop the Spruce Goose.

Speaking of George Bush, he flew an Avenger if I remember correctly and that appears to be an Avenger sitting in front of the PB2Y. It’s canopy is just visible enough to tell it’s an Avenger.

I purchased the 1/72 Tamiya Spitfire through Amazon. It’s in the case that I pictured earlier.
It came through US customs from Japan. There is a fire extinguisher that has to be cut, glued, and painted that sits in the cockpit area. Crazy. As you know, the entire model will fit in the palm of my hand.
I still love the Guillows above all. And now they are laser cutting their balsa.
