The PBYs and PBMs were painted black for night flights in the Phillipines. They were called Black Cats (Catalina) or Night Mares (Mariner).
My dad was shot down 75 years ago in his PBM, but rescued the next day by a PBY on a Dumbo flight (rescue). They called it a Dumbo after the flying elephant.
A friend of mine flew with my Dad and will be 100 this April. He still gets airborne in Pensacola in the summertime. Amazing guy!

To me, the Martin Mars was the best looking and mightiest WWII seaplane. Well, once it was civilianized for firefighting with a single tail.

sure as long as you overlook they leaked gas everywhere including inside the plane and the slightest spark made them blow up.
it was standard assumption if one was late or unaccounted for to just look for wreckage because they knew it had blown up from a fuel leak

Guilty. My son has a B-24 and a P-47 model diorama that I made in his room. Took me 6 weeks to do the B-24 right. The platform is a 3 x 4 piece of thin plywood with 1/4 round as the frame. I gave it a North Africa landing strip look using sandy dirt and took a couple of aluminum bean cans and painted them desert tan to simulate fuel depots. Scattered some sedentary rocks around. Looks pretty cool. Yeah, I enjoyed the time doing those models and building the diorama.

Parts were manufactured in different places / cities. Then the parts would be shipped to one location for assembly.
The bulkhead for the Catalina was built in downtown Covington (corner Gibson and Columbia St.), where Dependable Glass is today. Some of the cable / pulley system is still on the ceilings of the building.

I got to spend some time with a WW2 vet that served as air crew on a PBY. He was shot down and rescued twice, said he would have been okay with just being shot down once haha. Its wild to think they didnt have climate control in those aircraft.

Thank you. This is where I spend my free time unwinding and doing the hobby I’ve loved since I was about 8 years old. My collection is just shy of 110 models, all aircraft and armored vehicles. I have a AirFix 1:72 scale B-26B Marauder on my desk now that I started yesterday when I finished the Airone.

Grumman Goose was the primary transportation here for a long time. It's still quite a sight to see one.
