I was a kid in the 50's and came "of age" in the late 60's and the only people I knew who had a dog in their house was one aunt that had a stray she found as a pup and my godfather who was a bachelor and had a German Shepherd inside his house.
EVERYBODY else who had dogs kept them outside.

unless it was freezing they stayed outside. Just like the cows, horses, hogs and chickens.
they all got to come inside if it were freezing?

My mom who was suffering dementia came to stay with us and she kept calling our 3 indoor dogs "farm dogs" and told us they needed to go outside.
I came to the realization later she was probably right.

For most of my friends in south Louisiana during the 80s, most dogs stayed outside except for the little tiny ‘toy’ breeds.

Da fuk kinda question is this?
Even ancient Egyptians had inside dogs as pets
He's talking about his youth, not king tuts milemias ago.
He ain't wrong to ask the question. My parents only had outside dogs that weren't allowed in the house. The inside dog thing sure has made a come back in a large way, but it's more a decades ago.
Just like trash that feels they need to take there dogs into stores, planes, riding on their laps etc etc. That's all just this century.

I had family members with a poodle that lived inside back in the 80s. It was one of the best trained dogs I have ever seen
And this is the point of the OP for sure. People that grew up pre2k may remember 1 or so. But today it's equivalent to people who don't have dogs, so reversed.
I definitely don't remember seeing dogs to pet at stores and restaurants when I was a kid in the 90s.

Yes..but they were tolerated less inside back then. They for damn sure didn't gave their own furniture. I do recall seeing dogs outside mating back in the 80s much to the dismay of Bob Barker.
It cracks me up when people act like dogs and cats can't handle the hot/cold. We have outside cats that are too uncivilized to be indoors. During the winter they are fat and have super thick fur, during the summer they are skinny and thier fur thins out.

We had house dogs in the '60s and '70s but they spent more time outside than I think dogs do now.

People also smoked everywhere and thought it had health benefits. Door to door milk salesman were a thing. There were like 6 tv channels. Seatbelts werent a thing. Jello molds were all the rage. Lobotomies were still happening.

Not sure about that, but I recently moved into a high-rise and find it crazy how many people here (and surrounding buildings) have large dogs.
I know dogs are basically people's kids these days, but I'll never think it makes sense to have a 70lb dog cooped up in a small apt in the middle of the city.

I don’t remember anyone having inside dogs when I was a kid. Nowadays it seems like most people have an inside dog if they have a dog.
I don’t remember it either. I was raised by my Grandparents and my grandfather grew up on a backwoods dirt poor farm in Tennessee in the 1940s.
He said animals belong outside and he’d be damn if he had any kind of animal in his house lol.

Not near as many as today and most were poodles or dachshunds.

Back in the 60s my friend Ronald and his family had a chihuahua named coco that would hump my leg when I was at their house. Nasty little bastard. Down coco, down coco!
Ain’t Lilia had some snub nosed little dog that just laid around, the name was Fifi.
My mom was a stickler for cleanliness so we didn’t have inside critters except for a parakeet.
