When I was young, calling someone a coonass was fightin words. So it was not viewed as a "badge of honor" and everyone from south Louisiana didn't claim to be a coonass. Only the "Prarie French" were considered coonass. Later on it achieved the "badge of honor" status as the cajun cuisine became popular and people outside of Louisiana became fascinated with the people and culture. So as time went on, I thought everyone became cool with it. Not so. I was having lunch with an older Louisianaian one day. I was telling a story on myself (can't remember the exact reference) but I closed the story with, "Only a coonass". I literally thought I was going to have to fight the guy.

I remember those days when calling someone a coonass was fighting words. Like you said it wasn't until "the cajun cuisine became popular and people outside of Louisiana became fascinated with the people and culture" that it seemed to suddenly become cool to be cajun.

It's from "connasse" - a very derogatory term that the Spanish called the French when Spain ruled Louisiana.

Itself a corruption of a French word.

All traced back to the Frbench meaning : to know. In a biblical sense.

Some old timers really do take offence to it.The only time my grandfather ever threatened anyone was when someone joked about him being a coonass from Abbeville.

bullshite. Media makes up new definitions on every word and tell you what it means. When the Washington Redkins were named the Redskins dictionary definition was Proud Indian Warrior. American Indians rooted for the Redskins. You wouldn't know that now.

most folks don't know the term "coonass" originated during WWII from a very poorly pronounced english version of the French term "connoisseur", in short "connois", pronounced "coonass", meaning "one of knowledge, experience and expertise". far be it to let the truth get in the way of a good story. i wear the badge proudly as should all cajuns...

The version I've always heard is that it originated from WWI France when Cajun soldiers communicated with the French in Acadian French, and because they were not as "refined" as theirs snobby French allies, the French called them "connasse" which translates roughly to "dirty prostitute". It got anglicized into Coon arse, and Cajuns kept it as a badge of honor.

There's some debate about that. I've seen claims that the origin is the Attakapas word cunaso, meaning one who lives off the land.

Could be a case of wordplay by the Spanish.

People can't understand how a group of people took an offensive term, turned it upside down, embraced it, thus took it away from people attempting to use it as a slur.

Its like when your friends or older siblings make fun of you for something and you embrace it, they lose interest and stop making fun of you about it.

The world is so soft.

The fact that a group of people would actually take pride in a name originally used s a derogatory term, but instead wear it with pride does not compute to the butt hurt SJW crowd.

Same is true with the term "Redskin". The team name was coined by a pair of native american players on the team. "injun" was the derogatory term. "Redskin" was the term of endearment.

My old Papaw got in a fistfight at his nursing home because his roommate called him a coonass. He was like 94 or 95 when that happened.

My grandma Bourque told me I was a coonass-- and to never be ashamed of it. It was a good thing. I was probably about six. So you are trying to say Eva was wrong? I don't think so. :)
