I was attending a conference in Illinois for work, referred to myself as a coonass, and it was as it the needle scratched and the room just stopped.

A friend sitting next to me leaned in and said, "you can't say that word." I tried explaining that, I could refer to myself anyway I wanted. Still didn't go well. Had a brief talk with management. Very glad the manager was from the South and quietly told me not to say it outside of Louisiana again.

most folks don't know the term "coonass" originated during WWII from a very poorly pronounced english version of the French term "connoisseur", in short "connois", pronounced "coonass", meaning "one of knowledge, experience and expertise". far be it to let the truth get in the way of a good story. i wear the badge proudly as should all cajuns...

What about "coon's age"? I never understood that one until it dawned on me recently that its origins may lie in white people's inability to discern the age of black people, who often look much younger than their years, and therefore is racist. I'm not googling that shite so I'll leave it to mystery.

It's from "connasse" - a very derogatory term that the Spanish called the French when Spain ruled Louisiana.

I always thought Cajuns were the proper people living in the towns, governing, small business etc. And the coonasses were the people living out in the swamps, often unaccounted for.

Yeah, like in Southern Comfort most of the people in that movie are Cajuns but the Coonasses are the people that were hunting the Louisiana National Guard

The story I heard was that it came about during WWI among the US troops serving in France. The American officers learned that the french speaking Cajuns in their company could act as their translators. However, helping officers was looked down on by fellow enlisted men due to the officers having little regard for the troops. So the enlisted men started using the french word for bitch, "connasse", to mock the cajuns.

When I was young, calling someone a coonass was fightin words. So it was not viewed as a "badge of honor" and everyone from south Louisiana didn't claim to be a coonass. Only the "Prarie French" were considered coonass. Later on it achieved the "badge of honor" status as the cajun cuisine became popular and people outside of Louisiana became fascinated with the people and culture. So as time went on, I thought everyone became cool with it. Not so. I was having lunch with an older Louisianaian one day. I was telling a story on myself (can't remember the exact reference) but I closed the story with, "Only a coonass". I literally thought I was going to have to fight the guy.

The term "coonass" is a very offensive term. When the Cajuns were enslaved by the British they were forced to farm raccoons for their fur and delicious meat. The British took all the good parts and the poor Cajuns only got to eat the guts and tail - hence the name "coonass"
