Went To Renew Driver's License: Need Real ID to Be Able To Fly

Went to renew license today and I was told that I would need a Real ID in order to fly. Its not required if you don't fly or anything, but I will be flying at least once within a year so I have to go back and bring my birth certificate, my SS card and a copy of a bill.
I didn't even know about this until today. But I see that it says starting Oct 1, 2020 everyone will have to show updated drivers license. And that its some TSA bullshite.
Can someone better explain this bullshite to me?

I renewed my DL online and a week or so after that, I saw an article on the new law. I was not happy. I'm going to have to go through that all over again. I need to do it soon because I think as the due date approaches, it's going to be a mad house at every DMV.

I had a fake ID in HS in the mid 90s but rarely ever had to use it.

I think this was announced several years ago. I got mine Jan 2017.
