Piers Morgan crushed it.

Until today, I genuinely thought Colin Kaepernick was acting purely from a point of fiercely held principle, and one I happen to agree with. Now, I’m not so sure. By taking Nike’s money, Kaepernick’s made it seem like he won’t salute the flag, but he will bow down to the dollar. And by filling his boots with corporate cash, he’s made a mockery of any suggestion that he’s been ‘sacrificing everything.'”

As far as I know, Kaep has been a Nike sponsored athlete since he began playing in the NFL. Nike didn’t just up and decide to start paying him because of his social work.

The fact that people let this stuff bother them so much is insane. All you’re doing is giving the people you hate a louder voice.

I find it amazing people are willing to boycott Nike over signing an athlete they don’t agree with, but are so nonplussed about actual issues with Nike.

I’m sure it would be the same with ignoring all the shitty stuff Nestle does until they make a politically charged ad with LeBron:

apparently not, be he does seem opposed to making any sort of positive lasting impact with his moment in the spotlight. which is a shame. but not surprising.

:insert rotflmao emote to emphasize my vague point:

Before all this. There was a movement to bring light to the fact that police officers around this country had been abusing their power for too long. But now, it's just become a Black vs Cops and White people. Social Media. Nonsensical mess. With 0 positive outcome insight. Led by a ex-NFL QB bum who grew up in an all white gated neighborhood and raised by white parents. What a fricking mess of a 'movement'

you seem to be missing the point. without his 'stance', no one would know who Kaep is by now. he'd of faded into oblivion two years ago. Because he was a clipboard holder at best in the NFL past 2016. But due to his 'stance' he now has more of Nike contract than he would have based on his ability as a QB. You get that right?

i mean. don't hate the player, hate the game. same for Nike. both are going to profit off it. Capitalism bitches! but let's not act like this man is Martin Luther King Jr. Or Rosa Parks. He was a washed up athlete on borrowed time as an NFL QB. You honestly think he'd be out there working for the community if his 'stance' had been ignored completely back in 2016? frick no.

was a teenager when the “Just do it” campaign started 30 years ago. I was a Jordan fan but never owned a pair. Is that okay?

When I said Jordan days, I was referring to the playing days and whe he was the face of Nike. Nothing to do with shoes.

Actually Bo Jackson was the face of the ' Just Do it' add ( cross trainers) campaign when Nike finally surpassed Reebok as the #1 athletic apparel/ shoe company.

Now Kaepernick is the the face

The Bo Jackson campaign was “Bo Knows”

I wish we could compare the level of exposure Nike has received for this campaign relative to an alternate universe where they picked something basic and non-controversial like Jordan or whatever for the campaign.

For starters, he brought the 49er’s to a Super Bowl, so while he may not have been a household name qb, he certainly would not have been a nobody.

To add to that, if not for people getting bent out of shape because he exercised his right to free speech, he likely would’ve faded into oblivion by now. I think you’re missing the point that the stink caused by people like you is what’s keeping his name in the headlines.

For the record, I’m not a fan of kneeling for the anthem but I don’t have a problem with that method of peaceful protest. It doesn’t hurt anyone. Having the anthem before every sporting event in America is dumb anyway.

for the record, the issue is not that he is exercising his right to free speech. free speech exists between the government and the individual, not the employer and the individual.

i don't like the kneeling but if the government came in and said he has to stand, i'd have a bigger problem with that than the kneeling itself. his employer can do whatever they want with it.

a small difference, but important.

Is this something that has always bothered you or did the irritation just come around about 2016?

Why have a national anthem anyway? When would we, as a people, sing it? Once a year, on Independence Day?

An excellent point and one that rarely gets mentioned. If the NFL surveyed its fans and found that a majority were in favor of kneeling, kneeling it would be.

Those owners didn't come into their wealth by being poor businessmen.

again. missing the point. was his career in 2016 not on it's last leg? yes or no? He was riding the pine behind Blaine Gabbert, who also had a shite year and is now likely out of the league.

i'll shite on Kaep all day for decrying false statistics and protesting non-existent or at best, way overblown problems.

However, he did a decent amount of charity work the other 6 days of the week. it's pretty well documented.

.....for the same reason I haven't for the last 25 years. They are too narrow and their quality is crap.

Nike has had decreasing sales since 2017 in America and they're just trying to shake things up to seem more edgy and help with sales, but I don't think this is going to help them.

Since 2016, just like Kaepernick didn’t bother anyone until 2016. Why does that matter? If you want to counterpoint, then please explain why the anthem before sporting events should be required. “Because we have an anthem so we should use it” isn’t a great reason

quote:

I’m not missing the point. I never said he was an amazing QB. Just that he isn’t exactly an irrelevant figure in athletics. He had a good college career and in comparison to most NFL QB’s both past and present, he had a good NFL career too.

quote:

no no no. don't paint me as one side of the other. i didn't do that to you.

Well, you’re upset about his kneeling and Nike endorsing him. That puts you are on one side, no?

He did and, as mentioned before, it’s been well documented. On top of that, a camera and national broadcast isn’t on NFL players for the other 6 days. He had a medium to send a message and he used it in a non-violent way that did not actively affect the lives of any person who disagreed with his actions. The outrage is lost on me.
