Not arguing with you - just a little context. JWST was designed 15-20 years ago and at the time 68Gb was a LOT of storage. Once they "hardened" a storage device to survive launch and the ridiculously harsh environment of deep space, it was "certified" for flight. The certification process is extensive, so the 68Gb device was part of a frozen configuration. There have been dramatic increases in small storage device capacity since then but the risk of flying newer, unproven, untested, uncertified hardware is too great.

As an example, when the Shuttle retired in 2011 it's onboard CPUs were 486s - those were made obsolete by Pentium CPUs in the 1990s but the 486s were hardened and certified and proven - lowest risk.

That's cool and all but you can't tell me they couldn't strap a few 1 TB SSDs in their for shits and giggles.

"The project team is conducting additional investigations into the micrometeoroid population [and] how impacts affect beryllium mirrors," it added.

Another potential method to mitigate the strikes could involve minimising the amount of time that the JWST spent "looking in the direction of orbital motion, which statistically has higher micrometeoroid rates and energies".

This may be what becomes Webb’s actual legacy. A $10 billion game of Space Whack-a-Mole.

Indeed, we should have just split it with Ukraine and BLM directly.

Disinformation. fricking spy satellite all along. This just gives them a cover on why no more images.

Foreign Nations do not fret, this is spying only for treacherous Americans. We just put it far enough out there that the Chinese couldn't take it out immediately.

It was a lot of storage for the public. Gubment been well advanced in tht bro.

Does anyone actually believe they sent 10 billion dollars and 2 decades worth of work and strapped it on a payload skeeted it out into the deep dark void only to be taken out by snot Rocket from space a few months into it's operation.

I'd like someone with the smartest to run the numbers on the probability of tht happening. I basing this off of the theory that suggested that when the Andromeda Galaxy and the milky way galaxy collide, space is so vast, they could pass through each other and planets and stars probably won't even collide with one another. I also could have just had a false memory of thos3 facts and none of tht is true. I still stand behind my statement that you don't just risk that much money and time to blow your load before you even pick her up for prom.

#1 Maybe look at some higher res versions of the Webb images LINK LINK

#2 Recognize that these Webb images were taken during the commissioning and configuration phase. They were testing its ability to track fast-moving and very faint objects, in very narrow radiation bands. They were sensor tests which exceeded expectations, not intended to be "impressive" images for the general public.

You people are insane.

Let me cede that portion of the argument to you. Now, if possible, please explain how something originally budgeted at 500 million went to 10 billion.

We’ve all heard of cost overruns, going over budget, etc. But going over by 20 times the original budget figure?!?!? No frickING way this project was on the up and up.

As Deep Throat said, “Just follow the money.” I bet if they did follow the money some people would be going to jail.
