My uncle who was a boilermaker passed away 14 yrs ago taught me to weld as a teenager. He could weld in tight spots using a mirror. The man was talented. Unfortunately, his talent did not rub off on me.

There are some. When I was a fitter and got a green hand for a helper I always would have to show them how to tack before we got started. Some got it in an hour or two, some never got it.

Will long term welding FK up your eyes? Even with the face shield, PPE and all. Incidents just happens.

Everytime I have tried to weld my torch got stuck and the real welders made fun of me. They would say stuff like "yeah you better go to college pussy."

I've stick and mig welded before.
Stick welding was hard for me. I'm a perfectionist and I was bad at it. And a little bit bad looks like a blind guy did it.
MIG welding was easy. I'll admit it was in a shop class for engineering and all the settings were done for me. But it really was like a hot glue gun. Wasnt perfect bead's, but acceptable to me.
Now my extended family has a farm and I have an uncle who is impressive as a welder around the farm. Literally builds the cane trailers they use and it's hard to tell it's not made at some factory.

One thing everyone in the thread is missing is by the time someone kits out a new welding rig on a new truck with all the tools and toys AND pays the finance charges they will probably have 150k in it.

When every one of your welds is going to subjected to some form of non-destructive testing it becomes a different ballgame than the bead just appearing nice looking to the eye.

I am a licensed and certified J. B. Welder and my equipment didnt cost me anywhere near 100K. I spent 2 grand on my Cadillac and $20 on welding supplies
